This probably because of Marchand’s reputation, but I think he could have done more to avoid the collision.

He could have avoided that collision ... period.

Coach Q says Duclair out 1-2 weeks.

via Mark Lazerus tweet,

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said he thought the Marchand hit on Duclair was “incidental contact.” Said it was two guys “trying like hell” to avoid each other.

I watched that about 20 times and I literally can not see where Marchand makes any contact whatsoever with Duclair’s right leg. It looks like, while trying to avoid Marchand, Duclair’s leg gets stuck in a rut and bends awkwardly.

Godblender… What about marchand having both his hands hit duclair in the face pulling his body head first backwards. That creates the lean back and the bent leg of duclair. This is a play where a rat player made sure to make some contact and created a dangerous scenario for duclair. He does this….. a lot.

I watched repeatedly, too, and saw what Ataris did.

It looks like Duclair catches the edge and lands so awkwardly with his leg twisted behind him, because he is hit up high and pulled backward by Marchand.

I don’t exactly see what Marchand is trying to avoid.

If one means a knee-on-knee hit, absolutely, he avoids lower body contact.

But it’s easy to see that Marchand sees Duclair the whole way, from the instant he turns.
And if he is “trying like hell” to avoid Duclair down low, he compensates with almost
a two arm clothesline that pulls Duclair’s head and upper body backwards as Marchand is going around him.

The only thing I disagree with is calling Marchand a rat. Rats are actually amazing pets
- like small, really clean, super-smart, funny dogs. I sure wouldn’t want a Marchand around the house, though.

I don’t disagree with any of that. It still seems clear to me that in this particular instance this was, mostly, incidental contact and he definitely doesn’t go for his knee (or whatever “lower body” part is injured). If you watch it at full speed there is very little time for either player to react in a reasonable way as to avoid some contact with one another. I’m not making excuses for Marchand. His reputation obviously precedes him.

Marchand did’t do much to avoid him..he actually manage to hit him in the face with both his arms/hands..He know exactly what was going down…this is marchand we are talking about.

I’m leaning on it being a weird accident. Notwithstanding the fact that it’s Marchand, it just does not look like he’s setting up any sort of hit based on the angle of his body, and then it seems like he’s trying to awkwardly jump to avoid Duclair. Don’t think this warrants a witch hunt

I think Marchand as much as I hate him was trying to avoid the collision, however he seemed to make sure that if they did collide he wasn’t going to get the worst of it.

There wouldn’t have been ANY contact had Marchand not gone in the direction to hit a player who didn’t possess the puck. He probably made matters worse by trying to jump and avoid Duclair but he shouldn’t have been in that position to start with.

The injury might not be a direct result of the hit but the injury never occurs without the hit. A suspension would be well earned.
