Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin better hope this trade works out — but at first glance it sure doesn’t look good.
Late Friday night, the Canadiens traded Alex Galchenyuk to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Max Domi.
That’s it … nothing else coming back to Montreal for the player Bergevin selected with the No. 3 overall pick at the 2012 NHL Draft during his first year on the job.
To give Bergevin the benefit of the doubt — for now — this might be the first of several moves he makes this summer after the Canadiens missed the playoffs for the second time in three years and finished 28th in the overall NHL standings with a 29-40-13 record. Domi can become a restricted free agent on July 1, while Galchenyuk has two seasons left on his three-year, US$14.7-million contract with an annual $4.9-million salary-cap hit.
