from Rich Chere of NJ.com,
It is being called one of the biggest free agent bargains in the NHL this past offseason. After a training camp tryout, veteran winger Lee Stempniak was signed by the Devils to a one-year, $850,000 contract.
So far Stempniak has scored 14 points in 17 games while fitting in perfectly as the Devils' first-line right winger. He's scored an overtime goal to defeat the Rangers at the Garden and the tying goal in Ottawa with 32 seconds remaining before winning that game against the Senators with his shootout goal.
But when Stempniak's name comes up in conversation, the talk usually centers on the fact that he's played for eight different NHL teams and been traded five times. The West Seneca, N.Y., native is the definition of well-traveled.
So how come nobody wants Stempniak? Or how come everybody wants him?
"There's value in him. He gets traded for draft picks or players, so I think there is value there," Devils GM Ray Shero told NJ Advance Media.
