Kukla's Korner Hockey

The Mindset Of A Hockey Player

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

Rangers center Derek Stepan was sitting in a hospital Saturday recovering from surgery on a broken jaw, and the media's concern about him was limited to queries about when he would play again.

This is all Bobby Baun's fault.

In 1964, the Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman scored a game-winning goal on a broken ankle in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final and it glamorized the NHL tradition of players persevering through painful injuries in the postseason.

"It's kind of our culture to play through everything," said Rangers defenseman Kevin Klein. "Early on in the playoffs, (Anaheim's Ryan) Getzlaf took one off the face and came back."
