The Cox-Friedman-stove debuts online

10/25/2014 at 11:11pm EDT

Sportsnet's figured out that its Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman chit-chat is a smorgasbord of rumors and intrigue, and so they've decided to post it online AND to not geo-block it:

So, per Cox and Friedman:

1. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president Tim Leiwicke insists that he's not bolting the organization "by Halloween," but Cox believes that as soon as a new president is hired, presumably by the end of the year, Leiwicke will exit stage right;

2. Friedman says that Eric Staal does not want to be traded, he will be back on Tuesday and has stated that to GM Ron Francis that Staal wants to be a member of the Hurricanes long-term unless there's a new owner who wants to make a change of direction;

3. According to Cox, the Buffalo Sabres want to send Nikita Zadorov back to the OHL's London Knights, but Zadorov is in control of his situation, and he can head back to the KHL if he wishes; the Sabres will probably demote Sam Reinhart as well;

4. According to Friedman, the Oilers will probably keep Leon Draisaitl past the 10-game mark at which they'd burn a year of his entry-level deal, but it's more important to watch the 40-game mark as someone who plays more than 40 games coming out of his draft year qualifies for free agency at 25;

5. Regarding the Flyers' defense, Friedman says that the Flyers offered Ryan Whitney a 2-way deal but Whitney is playing for the Sochi Leopard in the KHL and wants to stay there; the Flyers have some cap issues, and the Oilers say that the Flyers haven't spoken to them about Jeff Petry, but Friedman believes that should the Flyers carve out cap space, that's a trade scenario to watch;

6. The Devils have lost 18 straight shootout games, per Cox;

7. The Tampa Bay Lightning arrived in Calgary and found that Steven Stamkos, who couldn't play for Team Canada at the Olympics, was still given a championship ring.

Or:

Whitney would have to clear waivers to play in the NHL as he's played in a professional league outside North America after the start of the NHL season;

The same rule would apply to Zadorov, so that's why the Sabres are probably peeved that Zadorov doesn't have to sign off on a transfer to London.

As for Reinhart, Wings fans learned the hard way that when a team returns a player to Major Junior Hockey, that player is bound to play for his Major Junior team until their regular season and playoff runs have ended.
