Tampa Bay defenseman Mike Kostka gets elbowed in the face by Douglas Murray

Per Greg "Puck Daddy" Wyshynski, Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mike Kostka missed a little time after Teemu Pulkkinen boarded him during the preseason, and April brings...Montreal Canadiens defenseman Douglas Murray also knocking out Kostka, though he did so with much more malice aforethought:

Murray got a match penalty, which means that the NHL's Department of Player Safety will review the hit, and no news is no news (again, via Wyshynski):

Reports are Murray has a phone hearing on Thursday with the NHL.

Phone hearing means under 5 games, right?
They are not going to get rid of this crap out of the game if they don’t start suspending players for 10 games or more.

That was a pretty blatant forearm shiver.  If this was Stamkos and not Kostka, it sure as hell wouldn’t be a phone hearing.

I am in agreement with you 100% here. While I do like the approach Shanahan has taken in his tenure as league disciplinarian I do believe that he needs to have stiffer penalties in order to modify player behavior.

Yes. This is the only thing that can even begin to change the players’ mentality regarding this stupid shit. Jesus Christ. This isn’t the 80’s. Today’s players are fu*king huge, in absolute peak physical condition and are wearing massive padding/gear. What may have been just a “clean” and hard hit 20-30 years ago can now end a player’s career much more easily. Take responsibility for your players, NHL.

Kerry Fraser of TSN on the hit…

Douglas Murray needs to be suspended for his decision and actions on this play. I wouldn’t expect it to be more than three games but your guess is as good as mine. There is a big difference between Brooks Orpik’s check that made contact through the body and the head of Jonathan Toews and Murray’s elbow hit to the head of Mike Kostka.
