Ryane Clowe Facing Possible Suspension For Leaving The Bench

via David Pollak of the Mercury News,

The NHL is reviewing the final minute of the Sharks' 2-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks to determine whether Ryane Clowe left the bench or was in the middle of a line change when he went after forward Andrew Shaw.

Clowe apparently took exception to Shaw's decision to drive Joe Pavelski into the boards in the game's final seconds. Officials appeared to quickly intervene, then handed out a boarding penalty to Shaw as well as a minor for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct to Clowe.

If the league finds Clowe improperly left the bench to go after Shaw, it could mean a 10-game suspension. There could also be lesser supplementary discipline if the league determines it was part of a line change. The fact the NHL is reviewing what happened was first reported by Bob McKenzie of TSN (tweets).

I found a video of the incident, but you really can't see when Clowe left the bench, so you can watch it below if you wish and please excuse the language in the YouTube video title.

via Elliotte Friedman tweet,

Ryane Clowe will not play tonight vs DAL, suspended pending hearing on Monday for altercation with Shaw (CHI) last night

Clowe is facing a ten game suspension and with him being offered an in-person hearing, it is at least six games.

Dirty hit by Shaw, stupid play by Clowe.  Was there a penalty called on Shaw?  Looked a lot like the Draper hit but Pavelski managed get his hands up to protect himself before his face hit the boards.

SolidTG7, Shaw did get 2 for boarding, Clowe 2 for roughing and a 10.

Thanks Paul, I wonder if Shaw will be hearing from the league at all, or is this a case of a dirty hit being let go because there was no injury.

I just don’t know what got into him.  He’s always been such a good kid at home.
Between this and the incident versus the Kings last year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daaU4QCM5MY), it seems that little Ryane has trouble sitting and behaving properly on the bench.  Perhaps his parents should have him screened for ADHD if he’s going to be jumping up and down out of turn and acting out like this or, or, I don’t know, at the worst, it might be time they should consider the military school option.  At the LEAST it’s straight to bed with no supper!

(hate to see someone coming off the bench, it’s a bad thing to do, but can’t help but wish the Wings had a Clowe to come off the bench when their players get waylaid.  I bet his teammates appreciate him for it.  You know Pavelski does.)

I think it’s a case of a penalty-worthy play being given a penalty.
