Panic Time for the Montreal Canadiens

01/12/2016 at 12:35pm EST

It seems like it's been five years since the Montreal Canadiens opened the season 9-0 -- but that was this season. Goaltender Carey Price was playing even better than his otherworldly 2014-15 season, but he only made it through 12 games so far this season, leaving November 25 with what the NHL's extremely vague injury parlance referred to as a lower-body injury. This is the second time that has happened this year -- and he's not expected to return now until the end of January, after the All-Star break. Since that 9-0-0 start, the Canadiens have gone 14-17-3 -- but have only won three games in their last 10, something that has moved the online betting world around.

So what has the Canadiens' brass done since then to remedy the goaltending situation? Well, not much. When Price went down, he had a sparkling .934 save percentage for the season. Since then, the Habs have seen Mike Condon, Dustin Tokarski and newly acquired Ben Scrivens between the pipes -- and they have combined for an ugly .891 save percentage. It's true that the Canadiens can't run out and pluck a top-shelf starting goalie from another team; instead, they have to wait for Price to get better and hope that they can ride him to a playoff spot.

That doesn't mean that they should do nothing, though. It's not like Price is the only injury. Jeff Petry, a fixture on their blue line, has a lower body injury keeping him day-to-day. Forward Brendan Gallagher just came back from two fractured fingers, but he is still not up to full speed. In addition to giving up more goals, the Habs are scoring fewer -- they are #28 in the NHL in total goals since November 25. The trade market is beginning to heat up, and the Canadiens need to do something. They are only three points above the last playoff position, and if they sit pat for another three or four weeks while Price is healing, they will find themselves looking up at that position from beneath. If they're going to keep with these goalies, they are going to need to play a more aggressive offensive style at least until Price is back.

One way to do that would be to deal defenseman Andrei Markov for some offensive help. Now 37, Markov just got moved off the top defensive unit so that he would have fewer ice minutes -- and help him keep some energy for the playoffs. However, the playoffs are now far from certain. While Markov is one of the veteran leaders on the team, he has only tallied 12 points at even strength this season. He does have a no-trade clause, but if the Canadiens find a contender to deal him to, it makes sense that he would be open to leaving a potential train wreck for a shot at the Cup. The trade deadline is not until February 29th, but if the Canadiens do not do something soon, Price could return just in time to lead the team to a ninth or tenth-place finish in the East -- and an early off-season.
