ISLANDERS EDGE PENGUINS IN FIRST HALF OF HOME-AND-HOME
Kyle Okposo scored the decisive goal in the third round of the shootout to power the Islanders to a win in the first half of their home-and-home series with the Penguins.

* At 13-6-0 (26 points), the Islanders trail the Penguins (13-3-2, 28 points) by two points for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. These clubs face off again Saturday at Nassau Coliseum, the third of five meetings in 2014-15 (also Jan. 16 at NYI and April 10 at PIT).

* The Islanders improved to 7-1-0 in their last eight contests. They have won 13 of their first 19 games of the season for the first time since 1987-88 (13-5-1); they didn’t record their 13th victory until their 41st outing in 2013-14.

* Okposo improved to 4-for-4, with three game-deciding goals, in tiebreakers this season. He is 8-for-21 (38.1%), with six game-deciding goals, in his shootout career.

* Frans Nielsen also scored in the shootout; his 56.3% career efficiency (36-for-64) leads all active players with a minimum of 20 attempts.

* Ryan Strome posted 1-2—3 to set a career high for points in one game.

* The Islanders now have won six consecutive shootouts dating to April 11 at NJD, including a 4-0 mark in 2014-15.

* ICYMI: Trailing 1-0 just 73 seconds after the opening face-off, the Islanders scored three goals in 1:35 to take a 3-1 lead midway through the first period.

KHOKHLACHEV LIFT BRUINS IN SEVENTH ROUND OF SHOOTOUT
After being recalled from Providence (AHL) Thursday, Alexander Khokhlachev scored the lone goal in the seventh round of the shootout to lift the Bruins to their third consecutive win.

* The 21-year-old Khokhlachev, the 40th overall selection by the Bruins in the 2011 NHL Draft, appeared in his second NHL game after making his debut April 13 at NJD. He has played in 15 contests for Providence this season, tying for the team lead with five goals and ranking second with 16 points.

* Down 2-0 after the first period, Dennis Seidenberg sparked Boston’s comeback with a goal from center ice. Seidenberg now has three goals in his last nine games, equaling his total from his prior 49 outings dating to April 25, 2013.

* Matt Bartkowski collected 0-2—2 for his second career multi-point game. His other came on Nov. 15, 2013 at OTT (0-2—2).

* Niklas Svedberg made 25 saves – and denied all seven shootout attempts he faced – to improve to 4-3-0 with a 2.40 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and one shutout in nine career NHL appearances.

* The Bruins now have won seven consecutive games against the Blue Jackets dating to March 15, 2011, including four straight at Nationwide Arena.

SCHNEIDER STOPS THEM ALL IN 20TH STRAIGHT START
Making his 20th consecutive start to open the season, Cory Schneider stopped all 29 shots he faced – including 13 in the third period – to record his 14th career shutout and help the Devils snap a two-game skid.

* With the start, Schneider broke Martin Brodeur’s franchise record for the most consecutive starts to open a season. Brodeur started the first 19 games for the Devils in 2001-02 (8-7-2-2).

* Per Elias, Schneider became just the third goaltender since 2005-06 to start at least 20 straight games to open a season. The others: Evgeni Nabokov and Miikka Kiprusoff, who started 43 straight games for the Sharks and 23 straight games for the Flames, respectively, to begin the 2007-08 campaign.

* Schneider improved to 9-8-2 with a 2.58 goals-against average, .914 save percentage and two shutouts in 2014-15. He also improved to 6-2-0 with a 1.58 goals-against average, .937 save percentage and two shutouts in 10 career appearances against the Oilers.

* Adam Henrique scored the game-winning goal, his first of the season. He posted a career-high four game-winning goals in 2014-15.

* The Devils recorded their second all-time shutout against the Oilers. The other was on Jan. 15, 1989, when Sean Burke made 26 saves and Patrik Sundstrom scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win at NJD.

LOOSE PUCKS
Despite the loss, the Penguins have earned points in 12 of their last 13 games (10-1-2) . . . Blue Jackets forward Ryan Johansen posted 1-2—3 for his sixth multi-point performance of the season. He has found the scoresheet in 14 of 19 games, tying for third in the NHL in assists (16) and fourth in points (23) . . . Penguins forward Patric Hornqvist recorded 1-1—2, including his team-leading 10th goal of the season (18 GP). He did not reach 10 goals until his 45th appearance in 2013-14 . . . Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (200) and Bruins forward Carl Soderberg (100) both played in milestone games . . . The Stars signed forward Jason Spezza to a four-year contract extension through the 2018-19 season . . . The Sharks acquired defenseman Brenden Dillon from the Stars in exchange for defenseman Jason Demers and a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

REMINDER: ‘DRY SCRAPE’ ELIMINATED
Effective today, the ‘dry scrape’ of the ice surface prior to the start of overtime will be eliminated. In place of the ‘dry scrape’ of the ice by two ice-resurfacing machines, the entire surface will be cleaned by shovel crews executing the same snow-clearing procedure used during TV timeouts.

The expectation is that the overtime period will commence approximately two minutes after the end of regulation play. The ice will not be cleaned again should the game extend beyond the five-minute overtime period; the shootout will begin immediately.

FIVE GAMES HIGHLIGHT SATURDAY’S NATIONAL SCHEDULE
Five games highlight Saturday’s Hockey Night in Canada telecast: Original Six rivals face off for the third time this season when the Red Wings visit the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre; two more Original Six foes meet when the Bruins play host to the Canadiens in their third matchup of 2014-15 and first at TD Garden; the Islanders honor Hall of Famer Billy Smith during a pregame ceremony prior to completing their home-and-home series with the Penguins; the Blackhawks look for their fifth consecutive win against the Oilers when they meet at Rexall Place; and Mike Cammalleri makes his return to Calgary, his home for the past three seasons, when the Devils visit the Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome.

NHL ANNOUNCES RESCHEDULED GAMES
The NHL announced that the postponed game between the Rangers and Sabres, originally scheduled for Friday at First Niagara Center, has been rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 20, at 7:00 p.m. ET.

The game between the Senators and Sabres, originally scheduled for that date in Buffalo, has been moved to Monday, Dec. 15, at 7:00 p.m. ET.
