McDONAGH, GIRARDI FUEL RANGERS’ COMEBACK
Ryan McDonagh earned the primary assist on Dan Girardi’s tying goal with 3:28 remaining in regulation and scored the winner 1:56 into overtime to lead the Rangers to their fourth consecutive victory.

* With the win, the Rangers (40-29-4, 84 points) leapfrogged the Flyers (38-26-7, 83 points) for second place in the Metropolitan Division. Philadelphia, however, holds two games in hand.

* The Rangers reached the 40-win milestone for the 17th time in franchise history, including seven of the past nine seasons.

* McDonagh (1-2—3) registered a career-high three points, including his third game-winning goal of the season. He has 5-7—12 in his past 12 contests, including 2-4—6 during a four-game point streak.

* McDonagh also eclipsed the 40-point milestone for the first time (13-29—42 in 73 GP) and surpassed 100 points for his NHL career (25-77—102 in 242 GP).

* Mats Zuccarello posted an assist to reach the 50-point milestone for the first time in his NHL career (15-35—50 in 68 GP).

* Henrik Lundqvist made 18 saves to improve to 7-2-0 with a 1.78 goals-against average, .938 save percentage and two shutouts in his last nine appearances, including four consecutive victories.

CARTER LIFTS KINGS IN RETURN TO PHILADELPHIA
Playing in his first game in Philadelphia since a June 2011 trade, former Flyer Jeff Carter scored the opening goal to lead the Kings to their 11th win in their past 14 contests, including their sixth straight victory on the road.

* With the win, the Kings (41-25-6, 88 points) moved eight points ahead of the Coyotes (34-26-12, 80 points) for third place in the Pacific Division.

* Carter reached the 25-goal milestone for the sixth time in his nine NHL seasons. He leads the Kings in goals and ranks second on the team with 46 points in 62 games.

* Justin Williams, who also began his NHL career with the Flyers (2000-04), added his 18th goal of the season.

* Dwight King scored the tiebreaking goal with 9:24 remaining in regulation. King has three game-winners in 72 games this season; he had one such goal in 80 career contests entering 2013-14.

SEGUIN EXTENDS STREAK, HELPS STARS INCH CLOSER TO PLAYOFFS
Tyler Seguin scored what proved to be the game-winning goal to help the Stars improve to 5-3-1 in their last nine outings, including consecutive victories.

* With the win, the Stars (34-26-11, 79 points) moved within one point of the Coyotes (34-26-12, 80 points) for the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Dallas also holds one game in hand and leads in ROW (DAL: 31, PHX: 29).

* Seguin extended his career-long point streak to nine games (7-9—16). He leads the Stars with 32 goals, including six game-winners, and 74 points in 69 games this season.

* Jamie Benn collected two assists and now has points in 10 of his last 11 contests (7-8—15), including three straight (3-2—5).

KARLSSON’S MILESTONE GOAL POWERS SENATORS
Erik Karlsson posted 1-2—3, including his 20th goal of the season, and Jason Spezza netted the shootout winner to help the Senators snap a six-game skid.

* Karlsson reached the 20-goal milestone for the first time in his five-year NHL career and also extended his point streak to seven games (3-8—11). He leads all defensemen in goals and points (68) in 71 games this season.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Karlsson is the first defenseman in Senators history to score 20 goals in a single season. He also is the first blueliner on any NHL team to reach the 20-goal milestone since 2010-11, when Dustin Byfuglien did so for the Thrashers.

* Elias says there are only five other active defensemen (besides Karlsson and Byfuglien) who have scored 20 or more goals in an NHL season: Sergei Gonchar (twice), Dan Boyle, Mike Green, Dion Phaneuf and Shea Weber.

SHARKS FALL IN SHOOTOUT, CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH
Mike Cammalleri scored the decisive goal in the shootout to lead the Flames over the Sharks, but San Jose still clinched a playoff berth by virtue of earning one point.

* With the shootout loss, the Sharks (46-18-9, 101 points) moved two points ahead of the Ducks (46-18-7, 99 points) for first place in the Pacific Division. Anaheim, however, holds two games in hand.

* The Sharks now have made the playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons, the second-longest active streak in the NHL (Red Wings: 22) and fourth-longest active run in North American professional sports.

LOOSE PUCKS
Flames goaltender Karri Ramo made 33 saves and denied all three shootout attempts he faced to win his fifth consecutive decision . . . Flyers forwards Matt Read and Jakub Voracek both reached the 20-goal milestone for the second time in their NHL careers . . . Lightning forward Valtteri Filppula posted an assist to extend his point streak to a career-long nine games (4-9—13) . . . Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron scored his 23rd goal of the season to stretch his point streak to five games (4-2—6) . . . Kings forward Marian Gaborik skated in his 800th NHL contest . . . Playing in his 400th game, Lightning captain Steven Stamkos scored his 21st goal of the season and the 229th of his career . . . The Hurricanes signed defenseman Justin Faulk to a six-year contract extension through the 2019-20 season.

RED WINGS, BLUE JACKETS BATTLE IN TIGHT PLAYOFF RACE
The Red Wings (33-24-14, 80 points) visit the Blue Jackets (36-29-6, 78 points) at Nationwide Arena in a national telecast in both the U.S. and Canada. Detroit currently holds the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, but Columbus, with more victories overall and more regulation/overtime wins (CBJ: 31, DET: 28), would pull ahead of the Red Wings with a victory. These clubs are meeting for the third and final time in 2013-14, following wins by each team on home ice. Overall, the Red Wings are 4-1-1 in their past six, while the Blue Jackets enter tonight’s matchup with four losses in their last six outings (2-3-1).
