Most NHL Owners Out Of The Loop

from Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet,

Now here we are in 2012 and many whispers we heard about Goodenow in 2004 are now being directed toward Bettman. "Old, tired and paranoid" are just some of the descriptions of Bettman these days. Does the commissioner still have a clear head to get the best deal possible for all 30 owners, or is he too bitter and jaded after close to 20 years on the job to think clearly?

Worse is the perception that only three people control all the power and information when it comes to the future of the NHL, that a new deal hinges solely on Bettman, Bob Batterman (lead counsel for the NHL) and Jeremy Jacobs (Boston Bruins owner and chairman of the NHL board). Everyone else is on the outside looking in when it comes to power in the league.

Ask many NHL owners outside of this small circle and if they answer truthfully they'll tell you they know as much of what's going on as you or me. Some teams will also tell you a two- to three-year slope toward 50/50 split works just fine, and to potentially burn the whole village down in an effort to keep fighting for teams like Phoenix and Florida is just plain wrong.

Because you should know more than a guy who is at least in the world of professional hockey, right?

Which league executives have you talked to who would dispute what he’s saying?

Kypreos may well be right, but he does have a reputation as a bit of a loose cannon at times.

Kypreous is in the tank 100% for the players. I would not rely on his perspective as an unbiased opinion on the matter.

Well, when you’re dealing with a league whose teams tend to not make the owners much money… why exactly would they being paying much attention?

Which league executives have you talked to who would dispute what he’s saying?

Which league executives has Kypreos talked to who would agree with it?  He doesn’t appear to have nay.

This article is a bunch of non-sourced garbage.  Note how Kypreos doesn’t actually say he has spoken to any owners.  All he does is put words in their mouths.

This would be like some other gasbag writing an article that says “ask many players outside a small circle and if they answer truthfully they’ll…’

It’s crap ‘journalism’.

The article headline about a “Silent Majority” is a bit misleading. The truth is that unless something goofy happens, we’ll never really know how united the owners are.

Sure, I believe that some of them are starting to sweat, just like I believe that there are some players starting to sweat, and while I’d like to believe that the NHL’s foundation for their claim that they’ll up and cancel the Winter Classic at any minute if the players don’t capitulate is getting shakier by the minute, I don’t have anything other than wishful thinking to go on for that.

Of course, the league’s constitution allows for some pretty goddamn heavy penalties (including loss of franchise) for an owner who speaks out (in a manner deemed “detrimental to the league”) and requires 3/4ths of the owners to overturn, so it’s possible that the foundation is getting shakier, but it’s all a bit hush-hush because of the severe nature of the penalties that the league’s commissioners is allowed to wield.

But like I said… that’s all wishful thinking.
