Morning Line- Ken Hitchcock

“This game is the same as four or five games we’ve played already. We’ve played really well, had a lot of good stuff, but don’t finish. I think we’ve got to look at everything right now. I think we’ve got to look at combinations, what’s working, what’s not working, what we need to get more from. Can’t just keep living on scoring chances, you’ve got to finish at the end of the day. I think we’ve got to look at every aspect right now.”

-Ken Hitchcock, head coach of the St. Louis Blues after a 2-1 shootout loss to Detroit.  Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has more.

I can’t speak for any of STL’s other games, but last night against DET is was pretty clear DET skated them to death.

By the 3rd period, when DET was still pressing, making long outlet passes, and rushing up the ice, STL was actively trying to slow it back down in any way they could, sometimes delaying entering the offensive zone even to slow it down and catch a breath or three.  DET kept coming, and STL slowly began losing interest in counter-attacking with the same zeal.

STL could keep up for a while, but by the 3rd DET started controlling the game more and more and STL just wasn’t able to skate and keep up, by and large.  That’s why it was so important for DET to keep it close early, like they did.
