Stafford was originally selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round, 13th overall, of the 2004 NHL Draft.

While with Rochester, Armia collected 52 points (17G, 35A) and 69 penalty minutes over 87 games. Lemieux, 18, was recently drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round, 31st overall, of the 2014 NHL Draft. The Buckingham, QC native is currently in his third season with the OHL’s Barrie Colts where he’s scored 35 goals in 46 games played this season. Over three seasons with Barrie, Lemieux has posted 117 points (68G, 49A) and 317 penalty minutes in 153 games played.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 11, 2015) --- The Buffalo Sabres today announced that the team has acquired forward Evander Kane, defenseman Zach Bogosian and goaltender Jason Kasdorf from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for defenseman Tyler Myers, forwards Drew Stafford and Joel Armia, the rights to prospect Brendan Lemieux, as well as the Sabres’ latest first-round draft pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Kane (6’2”, 198 lbs., 8/2/91) has played in six NHL seasons with the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise since being drafted in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft. In 2011-12, he led the Jets with 30 goals and, at 20 years old, was the NHL’s youngest 30-goal scorer that season. He has amassed 222 points (109+113) in 361 career NHL games, including 22 points (10+12) in 37 games played this season.

The Vancouver, B.C. native played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championship in 2009, helping Canada win the gold medal. He also played three seasons (2006-07 – 2008-09) with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League.

Bogosian (6’3”, 225 lbs., 7/15/90) has played in seven seasons with the Jets/Thrashers organization after being selected by Atlanta in the first round (third overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, recording 127 points (40+87) and 325 penalty minutes in 393 career NHL games. In 41 games this season, Bogosian has tallied 13 points (3+10) and 40 penalty minutes while averaging 22:10 of ice time per game.

Kasdorf (6’3”, 178 lbs., 5/18/92), drafted by Winnipeg in the sixth round (157th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft, is currently playing for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned ECAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2012-13. The Winnipeg native has also played in the USHL for the Des Moines Buccaneers (2011-12).

I’m sure it’s probably the 1st Buffalo got from the Blues or the Isles.  Still nice, but I can’t imagine Buffalo sent their own 1st round pick.

I think this is the first shot. Trades are gonna start happening now. If Anaheim wants a defenseman, now they’ve got to switch gears. Anyone looking to make a trade is on notice now.

On the brightside, maybe this has lowered the rate expected for trades over the next few weeks.

Did everyone forget that Bogosian is a pretty solid player in his own right, that like Myers, still has upside too? I don’t know anything about the prospects Buffalo sent, so hard to judge.

I don’t see this being that one-sided. Bogosian is a downgrade from Myers, from Buffalo’s perspective (though I still think he is a good defenseman and would love him in DET). Kane is going to continue to be a good player.

Stafford is declining, but maybe he wakes up in Winnipeg. The goalie to Buffalo I think is pretty decent. Buffalo gave up some prospects but I am wondering if they are that high on them anyways.

Lastly, Buffalo needs talented guys who are still young but can help anchor the team with the flurry of prospects coming up through the system.

I think this looks fairly even at this point.

this is not true, he has never lived up to any of the hype placed on him when he was drafted.

Regardless, Sabres were absolutely robbed on this deal.  Myers Stafford and Lemieux should have been more than enough to get this done.

Makes me laugh at the ridiculous price they were supposedly trying to extract from Detroit for Myers alone.

I agree. Myers hasn’t been great since his rookie season. Bogosian hasn’t quite lived up to expectations yet. Both guys are young, and maybe a change of scenery will help both of them out.

Kane has had discipline issues, but his talent is not in question. A new environment could make a huge impact on his play once he’s healthy. He’s statiscally similar to Stafford so far, but much younger and has a higher potential.

The 1st rounder (even a low one) in a deep draft definitely sways this more towards Winnipeg’s favor though. Especially when you consider they’re getting a big, young defender with a favorable contract.

The best thing for all the players involved here is that BOTH Buffalo and Winnipeg are COLD AS S#!T! So nobody is going to have a vast change of lifestyle! :p

I don’t get how people think BUF got fleeced.

Myers and Stafford are basically the EXACT same disappointment that Kane and Bogosian are.  That 1st is nice but going to be pretty late 1st round, and BUF has no interest in quantity 1st rounders when they need quality so badly.  So even that late 1st is expendable.  But let’s be real here:  Kane has way, way more upside than Stafford ever has had or will.  Stafford’s pushing 30 now (did any of you know he’s that old now?).  Kane is 23, and has scored 30 already before.  Yes Stafford has scored 30 but that was many seasons ago

BUF has cap space (and will for a long time) to burn and fairly deep pockets now, so the financial retention aspect also means absolutely zero to be honest.

My main take-away is that its a really, really strange trade.  A mythical “Hockey Deal” for sure, but very strange.  Both sides are making the deal and praying that somehow they defy all the evidence to the contrary.

BUF can’t even say they got size out of it though, because they traded size for size evenly.  Just two sides washing their hands of the whole situation and praying they can deal with the situations they got instead.

As for the DET perspective…. I’d maybe have taken one of Myers or Bogosian under certain circumstances, but I’m just as glad ot see someone else dealing with them.  And there’s really no circumstance under which I’d take Kane at this stage.  None.

So the consensus here seems to be that Kane, Myers, Bogosian and Stafford are all terrible hockey players. Smart.

I think this trade could go either way and only time will tell how good/bad it is. But from my Det perspective, I too am thrilled to be officially out of the Myers race (if we were even in it) because frankly I like the guys we have that they actually want way better than Myers (sorry guys… looks like Kindl, Andersson and a 2nd wouldn’t have done it! grin )

I don’t think the consensus is these players are terrible, I think it’s more like they wouldn’t be worth trading away our own home grown talent, or perhaps they are not considered to be a good fit within the Wings system.

KH has made clear his intention as he will not deal unless it is for an impact player, that will make a big difference. I do not see how any of these guys would be THE difference maker on our Team.

Leggy, last year, helped us keep a record playoff run going, but, Holland knew going in, that was all that trade would yield. This year we have a huge difference in personnel and over all health.

This is so cliche, but, I really like our Team. tongue wink

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Having more chances at landing quality players is how you get quality players, not by trading away 1st round draft picks for other teams problems.

BUF can’t wait 3 or 4 years for a guy.  They’re going to need someone within a year of drafting.  So no, in this case having “more chances” doesn’t mean anything.

I felt the same way. Since Buffalo is in the Red Wings division, they weren’t going to do the Red Wings any favors.  confused
