from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,
Sometimes the Late, Late Show can be unwatchable.
So it was for the Maple Leafs on Monday night, when they were 4:35 away from beating the Columbus Blue Jackets, with a possible shutout for the National Hockey League’s busiest goaltender. Though the Leafs haven’t had many of these unhappy endings when leading in the third period this season, they were left with jaws agape on the ice, a 3-2 overtime loss.
While the Leafs were not expecting to go to an extra period again after two shootout wins, Artemi Panarin ended it, beating Frederik Andersen after equalizer goals less than two minutes apart. Facing 30-plus shots for the eighth straight game, Andersen lost sight of a pinball shot that turned into a pop-fly landing behind him. Nick Foligno, whom he had stoned twice earlier, got credit for that, while a Morgan Rielly to Patrick Marleau pass was picked off and turned into Pierre-Luc Dubois tying marker at 17:13 of the third.
Leafs coach Mike Babcock cited a key lost faceoff, failure to box out and a bad line change among the breakdowns, and a turnover that might have allowed the Jackets to win it in the dying seconds of regulation.
