It’s The Time Of Season To Talk Trades

The latest from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

• The New York Rangers have been on the lookout for a top-four, right-handed defenseman and a source told me Tuesday that the Blueshirts have interest in veteran Dan Boyle from the Sharks. There’s an obvious connection there, with Rangers head coach John Tortorella having Boyle in Tampa when both won the Stanley Cup in 2004.

• My TSN colleague Bob McKenzie reported Tuesday night during our Insider Trading segment on TSN in Canada that he believes the ball is now rolling on the Jarome Iginla trade discussion front, at least in terms of the team and the player communicating the possibility of him moving. Boston, Pittsburgh, L.A. and Detroit, to me, are the teams that make the most sense and are clubs I know that have interest in Iginla. But can the Flames find a fit that makes sense both for them as an organization and for Iginla to feel comfortable enough to waive his no-trade clause? We shall see. A Flames front office source declined comment even off the record Tuesday night, which tells you what a delicate situation this is.

• Word on the street is that the Calgary Flames will move Jay Bouwmeester (who has one more year on his deal) only if they get blown away by a really strong offer. St. Louis and Detroit are among several teams with interest in Bouwmeester, but it doesn’t appear like a good bet he’s going to move unless a team really spends high.

Absolutely. Nothing makes more sense than the Wings giving up something like Tatar or Nyquist plus a first rounder for a rental player that will help them make it from the first round of the playoffs to the second before they’re eliminated.

This sounds like the kind of deal that the “new” Ken Holland can’t resist. After all, neither Tatar or Nyquist are going to play on anything but the third or fourth line for the next five years anyway.  tongue laugh

Hey, not a problem. Once Tick Tock moves Tatar or Nyquist (plus that first rounder) for Iginla, he’ll be more than happy to throw the other one in (along with Mrazek or Sproul) for Bowie. Heck, he’ll probably thow in Ferraro or Sheahan just to show he’s a GM that other GMs can bend over the half boards and “use” until he has nothing else to give.

Two years ago, I thought Holland was a “mastermind” when it came to getting what’s best for the Wings. But the ultra-restrictive cap system has shown he’s nothing more than an average GM who’s more than willing to be “taken advantage of” by smarter GMs (cough*StevieY*cough).

Here’s my unsolisited advice for Holland. Do nothing, you POS. It’s your best chance of avoiding screwing the organ-I-zation.

Holland’s really damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. If he blows the team up and trades prospects, he’ll be shunned. On the contrary, if he keeps the team as is, dumps a few old guys and brings up prospects, people will be pissed for him not making any sort of trade.

Despite all the crying, I really don’t think Tatar, Nyquist, Andersson or any of the top prospects in the Wings organization will be moved. One look at how quickly guys like Datsyuk, Cleary and Bertuzzi will be gone should be some assurance of that.

Bingo.

I got a pretty decent laugh out of OTC blasting Holland for not making trades, and then for possibly making trades, and then the trades he’s actually made.

That pretty much covered all eventualities.

It’s going to be a rough, well, forever for fans like OTC.

I would like to see one move by Tick Tock. Trade Flip and whatever for Bobby Ryan. If he lets him walk this summer and we get nothing in return I’m gonna be ornery. anAnd NO we don’t need him at 4.5+ because Dats might leave after next year. He’s not a second line center. I’m not sure if they’d have any interest in him (prolly not) but a guy can dream right?
I do hope we pick up some size at forward and a decent Dman this summer. Not holding my breath though

I would love for this to happen, but it won’t.  Maybe if Ryan were on an expiring contract it would, but since he’s not, if the Ducks move him at all it won’t be till the offseason.  They’re probably the team to beat, at least in the Western Conference, so they’d be foolish to move him during the season.

Yeah, isn’t it amazing that someone could want his favourite team’s GM to make a move that would improve the team, but not make a move that would jeopardize the future?

Insane, right?!?!?
