It’s That Time Of Year- Sources Say Regarding Jason Spezza…

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

One Canadian team has reached out to try to get Senators' captain Jason Spezza.

He likely doesn't want to go there.

League sources say the Calgary Flames have made a pitch to the Senators for their top centre but what they're offering and the destination itself make the chances of a deal happening slim.

While Flames' GM Brad Treliving deserves credit for trying to make a splash and rebuild, sources say Spezza has no desire whatsoever to stay in Canada and has told the Senators as much.

Sources say the Flames, Canucks, Oilers and Jets are among those on Spezza's list of 10 teams where he doesn't want to end up. The status of the Maple Leafs and Canadiens isn't known but he wouldn't be dealt to either of those places.

...the Flames would also have to sweeten the pot because their offer falls short.

So, putting Spezza’s objections aside for a second, Ottawa thinks that trading Spezza’s 23 goals and 43 assists (66 points) for three players with a combined 39 goals, 75 assists and 104 points plus a 2nd or 3rd round pick “falls short”?

Wow. I wish someone would offer Ken Holland the same kind of point-production deal for Franzen. And, just to make the deal happen, I’d be willing to let them skip the pick. wink

The Flames are believed to be offering Jiri Hudler, Mikael Backlund, possibly Dennis Wideman and one of their several second and third-round picks.

If this is actually the offer made (and I am skeptical here as Garrioch is often blowing smoke) you can put me firmly in the camp of not being a fan of the new GM. It is a rebuild. Why would the team make a deal like this? Spezza’s best days are behind him.
