via the OC Register,

Talks between the two sides in recent weeks had been progressing and the gap appeared to shrinking as they sought common ground on a multiyear deal. But a source with knowledge of the talks said there hasn’t been any official communication since Thursday.

Beleskey figures to attract significant interest from other suitors in what looks to be a thin market for impact free agents. The Ducks weren’t prepared to pay him $5 million per season, which many believe he can fetch from another team.

I was on board with this before but now, I’m passing. His career arc is very, very similar to Abdelkader’s (and they may be somewhat similar players). It’s concerning if he parlays one “breakout” season into a $25M contract. That’s what Abdelkader will be looking for next summer. Beleskey is the perfect benchmark.

The key will be: How will Abdelkader follow-up this year? If he repeats last year, you can argue he will get more than what Beleskey got, since Beleskey did it only once by the time his contract came up. Abdelkader would’ve done it twice.

If Abdelkader regresses to his former production, it will obviously lower his bargaining power but by how much, I don’t know.

Would it be so bad to offer Belesky $5M?  If you were willing to move Howard for a pick, and acquire Lehner, and then perhaps one other, you would have a good, hard skating winger with size in his prime to bridge the age gap between the youngins and the vets, and you’d have insurance against Abby leaving next year if he so chooses.
