How About A Few Hockey Notes?

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- The new deep thinkers don’t care much for plus-minus stats, but I’m still blown away that Bobby Orr was +124, +86, +84, +80 in four individual seasons in Boston in the ’70s. In most seasons, the NHL leader is below +40. Ryan Suter tied for the lead this year at +34.

- Amazing what kind of roster the Nashville Predators have put together with just about the smallest front office and scouting staff in the NHL.

- Terry Pegula paid $189 million US to buy the Buffalo Sabres, in a hockey-crazed market, and operate the arena as well. Bill Foley paid $500 million for an expansion team in Las Vegas, with hope it might work.

Its almost like the game was completely different when Orr played.

The game is about creating offence with speed. Guys like Jagr and Iggy are too slow for the game now :/. I’m a fan of both players but they may need to hang up their skates. Or they spend the summer with Gary Roberts working in explosive speed and conditioning. That’s the one way I see them surviving another couple of seasons.

Red Line removed. Less teams so same teams played each other a lot more making for more physical games.
Speed of todays game is way to fast and basketball like.
Rather see more hip checks, open ice hits and board crushing checks than trapezoid rule and two line passes allowed todays NHL.

Lotta of scoring in the 80s and fights ah better era and the 70s the best probably.

I think that Konstantinov’s +60 in 95- 96 is equally impressive.  A much different game than Orr’s era, but he played at the beginning of the dead puck era.
