via the Chicago Blackhawks,

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have recalled goaltender Jean-Francois Berube from the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs and placed goaltender Corey Crawford on injured reserve.

Berube, 26, is 6-6-0 with a 2.54 goals against average, .913 save percentage and two shutouts in 12 appearances with the IceHogs this season. He posted a 3-2-2 record with a 3.42 GAA and .889 SV% in 14 appearances with the New York Islanders last season. In 21 career NHL games, spanning two seasons (2015-17), Berube has registered a 6-4-3 mark with a 3.11 GAA and .900 SV%. He was signed by the Blackhawks on July 1, 2017.

The Repentigny, Quebec, native paced the American Hockey League with 37 wins during the 2014-15 campaign, helping the Manchester Monarchs win the 2015 Calder Cup. He finished the regular-season with a 37-9-6 record and ranked eighth in the league with a 2.18 GAA before going 13-3 during the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs en route to the championship. He was also named an AHL All-Star in 2015. Berube has appeared in 122 career AHL games between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (2015-16), Manchester Monarchs (2009-10, 2012-15) and IceHogs (2017).

Crawford is 11-7-2, is seventh in the NHL with a 2.29 GAA and shares fourth with a .930 SV% in 21 appearances.

Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times,

“He’s been our best player all year, no doubt,” Patrick Kane said. “Very consistent. He’s been rock solid back there all year. He’s been awesome.”

But for the third time in four seasons, Crawford’s hot start has been derailed by injury. The Hawks placed Crawford on injured reserve Friday with an undisclosed injury, recalling journeyman goaltender J-F Berube from Rockford. Crawford will have to miss a minimum of seven days.

A year ago Saturday, Crawford was rushed to a Philadelphia hospital with appendicitis, and he missed 10 games. Three years ago Friday, Crawford injured his ankle at a Rise Against concert at the House of Blues, and he missed eight games.

But in those instances, the Hawks could rely on Scott Darling and Antti Raanta, respectively, and both played well in Crawford’s absence. This year, the Hawks have a relative unknown in Anton Forsberg, who is 1-2-2 with a .904 save percentage and 3.67 goals-against average. The 26-year-old Berube has a .900 save percentage and 3.10 GAA in 21 career NHL games with the New York Islanders. He’s 6-6-0 with a .913 save percentage and 2.54 GAA with the Rockford IceHogs this season.
