It could be a slim pickings UFA market.

Matt Niskanen,, UFA Pitts,  shoots right, 28 years, defense, TOI - 20 min, can be had @ 3 Mil a year,  Swapping him out for Quincey saves money and we get a right hand producing double Quincey’s stats and the guy played 81 games last year.

I doubt it.

Also, I think Alfredson is getting the cart ahead of the horse.  He showed his age this year playing only about 60 games.  I’d tell him, we are going with the kids and not offer him a contract, maybe that will help his wife to decide.  They still make home in Ottawa.  Kenny, try to sign Legwand for his grit and he also plays the whole year, he’ll want the same money but another 6 year contract, give him 3 years and the same cap hit.  A good centre for the kids.

I agree with Garth. I doubt he gets less than $4.5 per, likely for four or more years.

I don’t see Niskanen being had for $3 million.  There are a lot of teams out there that need help on defense and have cap space.  He’ll probably be able to get around $5 million or so a year from someone with decent term.

As for Legwand…  With the logjam the Wings have at forward, I am not sure if they will bring him back.  He was on the 4th line.  He wasn’t killing penalties or on the power play.  You just can’t afford to pay a guy like that a lot of money.  Your 4th line guys should be in the “$2 million and under” bracket cap-wise.

I honestlynthonk whilebeveryone is going for point producers Detroit really needs some veteran snarl on the back end preferably in the top 4 mold.  Let youngsters do their thing and ship lashoff and kindly so Sproul marchenko oullette get a good shot.  We need something to neutralize that hard for echeck and if a teams putting it in good spots you need someone who can battle in the trenches not to mention clear the front of the net.  We need someone who can cause hesitation against the other team coming into our zone.  Kind of guy that forces players to the outside so not to pay the price.  Also to clear the front of the net.

OK, so lets give Niskanen a little more and a term to replace Quincey, he is a right hand shot which we desperately need, we will have the cap space get him,  he is also used to a top 10 team.
Legwand, we need his grit and the young guys are not going to jump to 1/2 line more like 3/4.  It was a stupid move to trade for him and let him walk, why would we give away a prospect and a draft choice to rent a 4th liner.  Kenny will sign him for sure, if we have too many centers he can play the wing.  Give me lots of centers.

Unfortunately, I think you are correct.  KH seems like he can’t let go of players at times.  He’ll sign him and we will groan but in the end KH will look like a genius…. again.

In Kenny We Trust!

Joni Pitkanen.

Keep an eye on him and his status.  He’s a UFA come July, coming off over a year missed to injury.  If his heel is ok, he’s the minute-eating defenseman a lot of teams could really use.  He has said he still is working hard to be ready to play.

He’d be a gamble worth taking if he is up to playing come camp next season.

He won’t be on anyone’s lists because he has a null stat line this season.

I agree Primis…with one caveat…

How that situation work out with Weiss this year?

No gambling please, not with my team.  That sounds a lot like the Weiss scenario, we signed him even though he spent the year injured, came here and guess what spent the next year on the shelf and still no end in sight.  If I was the owner, that would really turn my crank to roll some heads.  I don’t think Kenny is as safe as everyone suggests.

Big difference with Pitkanen is that his isn’t a series of lingering injuries, it was one serious injury.  Pitkanen hasn’t ever been rushed back or told to play through it.

I would take a gamble on Pitkanen easily over another year of Quincey.  There *is* no upside to Quincey.  Pitkanen isn’t an elite d-man or anything, but assuming he really is healthy and able to play whoever signs him will likely be veeeeeeeeeery happy with the move.

I’d like to see Niskanen in Detroit too, but Is there any indication he’ll even hit the market? I gotta believe Pitt is gonna lock him up before open season.

I’m on board with Pitkanen as well. Always been a solid puck mover. The injury just means his asking price should be down. Tom Gilbert would be another I’d target.

Once more for the cheap seats: BECAUSE THEY NEEDED AN NHL CENTRE SINCE ALL THEIR CENTRES WERE INJURED.

Judging by Legwand’s play, they still didn’t get an NHL center.

Fair point.  I didn’t say it was a good deal.

Primis are you really Kenny Holland, the gambler, or are you a spy from another organization.  We are running a hockey team here not a roulette wheel!
