I quickly learned that sportswriters live in a different world than their readers, for better or worse. Journalism schools and editors taught us that objectivity was a primary mission. We don’t celebrate wins and mourn losses. We report the facts, positive or negative, and let the readers decide. In a column or commentary, we are expected to dish out credit and criticism as warranted, regardless of the side.
So here I am knee-deep in my last regular column — Rumblings will go on for a while — and that fundamental journalistic tenant remains, even while the world around us has changed.
These days most people seem to want their news (and even their sports) slanted toward their viewpoints, whatever they are. There are still those who value objectivity, who see the merit in an unbiased observer offering his honest opinion, but more see it as us vs. them.
