Per the Sporting News's Sean Gentile:
Some sad news emerged on Thursday about a pair of NHL prospects.
Scott Winkler, a 2008 third-round pick of the Dallas Stars, was found dead on Wednesday night, and Kristians Pelss, a winger in the Edmonton Oilers system, is missing after jumping in a Latvian river.
Winkler, 23, was found by his mother at his parents’ home in Asker, Norway. The cause of death is unknown, according to Ken Ralph, athletic director at Colorado College, where Winkler played four years.
“The first thing you feel is shock and secondly you hope it isn’t true,” Ralph told The Gazette of Colorado Springs. “Scott had been working very hard and done a great job preparing himself for professional camps this summer.”
Pelss, 20, went missing on June 11, and while there are unconfirmed reports out of Latvia that he drowned, no body has been recovered. David Staples at the Edmonton Journal has more information.
