If you were the coach of team Sweden, would you say “no” to him if he asked to be on the team?
I doubt there are any rules that would prohibit him from playing.

They said no to Victor Hedman and Jonas Brodin. I don’t think they’d take Lidstrom as a replacement over either of those, sadly. He definitely should be better thought of than friggin’ Hjalmarsson or Oduya though until the day he can’t see to lace his skates.
