"(Anti-fighting advocates) never been in our shoes, they've never played the way we play. They've never done the things that we've done. But they're the first guys to jump on the bandwagon and (say), 'oh, well, these guys are useless,' or 'they're goons and thugs.' "

"I know what's gotten me here. Guys have asked me if I could change it. You know what, probably not. I'd be a different guy. If I came up a different way, I might not be here."

-Steve MacIntyre of the Pittsburgh Penguins orbanization on the fighting topic.  Much more from Sean Gentille of The Sporting News.

There isn’t a goon alive that wouldn’t switch their ‘skill’ set with Crosby’s.
They fight because it’s the only thing they can do in order to earn a paycheck thru hockey.

Of course goons like McIntyre won’t accept the fact that they lend nothing to the game outside of entertainment purposes. They want to believe they have an impact on the game. They don’t. Their teammates love them, the fans love them, but the game wouldn’t suffer one iota without them.

Goons are for entertainment purposes only. They were created by the WHA in order to help sell tickets.

I think “skill” guys like Crosby would whole-heartedly disagree with that.

LOL, of course Crosby wouldn’t want to swap skills with McIntyre, but I’m sure Steve would take that trade-off.

Yeah I don’t have to have been in a goon/fighter/thugs shoes to have an opinion on their use because it’s my entertainment they’re out there for.

Of course, it’s not just me.. it’s the totality of hockey fans and where they stand.

My stance on it is that they’re useless.  Steve MacIntyre has never entertained me as a hockey player and nobody has convinced me that the Steve MacIntyres out there make it any more fun or easy to watch the actual skill guys ply the trade for which I actually do tune in and buy tickets.

I don’t want fighting out of the game entirely, I want fighters out of the game. I don’t care if Steve MacIntyre wants to throw down with a guy at just the right time. I care that he’s wasting six minutes of ice time doing nothing but looking for that right moment when I’d much rather have a 9-minute player trying to actually win the game.

If Steve MacIntyre makes the rest of his team better by being a big dumb useless no-skill goon who’s willing to throw down with the other team’s big dumb useless no-skill goon, then more power to the both of them.  I’d personally rather watch a team send out a skilled guy to draw MacIntyre into spending the next two minutes in the box so they can score on his team and make them all feel worse.
