Confidence Growing For The Wings

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

“It shows a lot of character,” Adam Erne said. “They’re a highly-skilled team with a lot of big names. We just stuck with it, stuck to the gameplan. Eventually it paid off.”

Erne scored at 9:17 of the second period and assisted on Robby Fabbri’s tying goal at 2:03 of the third.

Thomas Greiss made 26 saves and shut out the Capitals over the final 37:37.

“I think our goaltending is strong,” Erne said. “We are confident that they are going to shut the door for us. I think we have the skill to score 2-3 goals a night. If we do that, we’ll win a lot of games.”...

“We have a better hockey team, so you have a better chance to come back, and with that you have more belief, and belief that you can come back in those types of situations,” Blashill said. “I didn’t feel any frustration or panic on the bench at all. We just kept playing.

“To come back and have a chance to win in overtime you need good goaltending against that team. They have a lot of talent, and they make plays out of nowhere.”

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

“We’ve been in situations where we found our way to wins, and that breeds confidence,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s part of it. We have some guys that have matured over the years in terms of living through that. As hard as some of those moments are to live, you hope you grow. A number of our guys have grown even through some of the difficulties we’ve faced. And then we have some new faces that have a calm demeanor to them, and just kind of keep playing.”

Dylan Larkin’s line with Lucas Raymond and Tyler Bertuzzi has been phenomenal, but there’s enough depth to roll four lines. Blashill moved Erne up to play with Robby Fabbri and Pius Suter; that paid off with a goal from Fabbri. Moving Filip Zadina to Michael Rasmussen’s line with Vladislav Namestnikov added more scoring dimension to that group.

from Samantha Pell of The Washington Post,

The Detroit Red Wings scored the final three goals — including Dylan Larkin’s winner with 3:23 left in overtime — to secure two standings points with a 3-2 win.

Larkin’s snipe through a screen from the left circle improved the upstart Red Wings to 4-2-1. The Capitals dropped to 4-0-3 but still have not suffered a loss in regulation.

“There wasn’t a lot of room. There wasn’t a lot of space,” Capitals Coach Peter Laviolette said. “[The Red Wings] were able to capitalize a couple times five-on-five, and we just couldn’t get off the mark. I thought we pressed well in the third period — probably had three or four really good chances at five-on-five in the third period to win it ... and couldn’t get it done.”

from Chris Cerullo of RMNB,

The Washington Capitals let a bad team stick around for far too long and faced the consequences as the Detroit Red Wings found a way to eke out a 3-2 overtime victory on the road.

The Caps shouldn’t be losing to that team. Too casual an effort.

Greg Wyshynski of ESPN,

Detroit lost in five games to the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that Yzerman built as general manager. Nicklas Lidstrom had retired, and Henrik Zetterberg (35) and Pavel Datsyuk (37) were next. But Red Wings general manager Ken Holland refused to enter a rebuild at that point.

“The media was really pushing for me to go into a rebuild mode, and my response was that to go into a rebuild mode and do it right, to come out the other side and be legit, was an eight- to 10-year process,” Holland told me this week.

“When you’re moving out established NHL players for draft picks, it looks great. But it takes a while. You’re drafting 18-year-old kids, and you need multiple ones to hit. Now you’ve got the lottery, where you finish last and you might not win the lottery. You’re trying to chart a course and go into rebuild mode. You think you’re going to get back into that big-boy league in three or four years? Somebody is dreaming.”

I had a pretty good laugh at this one.
