Calgary Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau has captured the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded "to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability," as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Gaudreau was named on 130 of the 167 ballots and received 54 first-place votes for 906 voting points to finish ahead of Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues (738) and Mikael Granlund of the Minnesota Wild (445).
Gaudreau (18-43—61 in 72 GP) reached the 40-assist and 60-point milestones for the third time in as many NHL seasons to propel the Flames to their second playoff berth in three years. He registered a career-low two minor penalties and four penalty minutes, tied for the fewest among skaters who appeared in at least 41 games. However, Gaudreau’s average time on ice (18:29) was four minutes greater than anyone else in that group. The 23-year-old Salem, N.J., native is the second Calgary player to win the Lady Byng Trophy in the past three seasons, following Jiri Hudler in 2014-15.
