Your Frank J. Selke Award Winner

06/21/2017 at 8:44pm EDT

Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron has won the Frank J. Selke Trophy for a record-tying fourth time in recognition of "the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game," as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Bergeron garnered 1,147 voting points, including 71 first-place votes, to edge second-place Ryan Kesler of the Anaheim Ducks (945 voting points), the 2011 Selke recipient. Mikko Koivu of the Minnesota Wild finished third with 752 points in his first year as a finalist.

Bergeron was the NHL's busiest player in the face-off circle for the third consecutive season, leading the League with 1,812 draws and 1,089 wins. His face-off win percentage of 60.1% ranked third in the NHL. Bergeron also ranked first overall in the team puck possession metric SAT (shot attempts differential), as the Bruins registered 439 more shot attempts than they allowed when Bergeron was on the ice while each team had five skaters per side. Bergeron's fourth career Selke win ties the all-time mark set by Montreal Canadiens forward Bob Gainey, who took home the prize in each of the first four years it was presented from 1978 through 1981.
