ALL-STAR GAME OFFICIALS
The referees for today's game are Dave Jackson (#8) and Wes McCauley (#4). The linesmen are Brian Mach (#78) and Mark Shewchyk (#92). Jackson, the NHL's longest tenured referee who recently passed the 1,500-game milestone, worked the 2002 All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Mach, McCauley and Shewchyk are making their All-Star debuts.
NHL ALL-STAR GAME IN TAMPA BAY
This year marks the second time NHL All-Star activities are taking place in Tampa Bay. The Lightning previously hosted the NHL signature event in 1999.
1999 NHL All-Star Game - North America All-Stars 8, World All-Stars 6
The North America All-Stars defeated the World All-Stars 8-6, winning under the international-flavored All-Star format for the second time in as many contests. A player from each team tallied a game-high four points, Dallas Stars F Mike Modano for Team North America (1-3--4) and Toronto Maple Leafs F Mats Sundin for Team World (1-3--4). World/Carolina Hurricanes G Arturs Irbe recorded an assist, becoming the first puck-stopper in All-Star history to make the scoresheet. The game was highlighted by Wayne Gretzky's three-point performance (1-2--3) in his final All-Star appearance. The Great One received his third career All-Star Game MVP.
NHL ALL-STAR JERSEYS
Inspired by the state of Florida, the uniforms for the 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Game create a timeless aesthetic that simultaneously pays homage to the history of the League while celebrating the city of Tampa.
Utilizing the primary colors from the host Lightning as a base, the uniforms are centered around the native color palette of black, royal blue, white and gray, while a custom color treatment featuring the “energy” colors of UV yellow and solar red have been uniquely applied to evoke the warm, vibrant sunset tones and energy of the Tampa area.
The uniforms are highlighted by a silver metallic film with four die-cut stars, one for each division, that allows the body fabric to show through. Accenting the color palette and jerseys, a custom-designed number font was inspired by the suspension cables of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a Tampa landmark.
Additional design details include the name of each division in the back of the collar, along with the All-Star event patch on the right shoulder and corresponding full-color team patch for each player on the left shoulder.
ALL-STAR GAME QUICK HITS
* All 31 NHL teams are represented on today's rosters. The All-Star host and first-place team in the overall standings, the Tampa Bay Lightning, boast a League-high four players (G Andrei Vasilevskiy, F Nikita Kucherov, F Brayden Point and F Steven Stamkos). The Lightning contingent's Atlantic Division team will be guided behind the bench by Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper.
* The 2018 NHL All-Stars with the most career appearances in the midseason showcase are Chicago Blackhawks F Patrick Kane and Washington Capitals F Alex Ovechkin, each of whom will be skating in his seventh career game. Montreal Canadiens G Carey Price will be appearing in his sixth All-Star Game.
* Fifteen players will be making their NHL All-Star Game debut, led by the Central Division's five.
* The youngest player among the 2018 NHL All-Stars is not among the group of 15 making their All-Star debut. Toronto Maple Leafs F Auston Matthews, 20 (b. Sept. 17, 1997), is appearing in his second game in as many NHL seasons.
* The eight goaltenders in today's game will face a group of skaters who have scored a total of 5,687 regular-season goals. The shooters will be facing a collection of netminders who have made 97,273 career saves.
* Metropolitan Division captain Alex Ovechkin has scored seven regular-season overtime goals since the 3-on-3 format was introduced for extra time in 2015-16, tied for the most in the NHL in that span (w/ Los Angeles Kings F Jeff Carter). Other 2018 NHL All-Stars with at least four such goals are Brent Burns (five), Sidney Crosby (four), Johnny Gaudreau (four), Claude Giroux (four), Patrick Kane (four), Anze Kopitar (four), Nathan MacKinnon (four) and Brad Marchand (four).
* Calgary Flames F Johnny Gaudreau has skated in both prior All-Star Games played under the three-on-three tournament format and shares the top spot for most goals (three) and most points (seven). Pacific Division teammate Brent Burns shares the mark for most assists (five).
* The 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Game MVP will receive a 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid. One of this year's All-Stars -- Minnesota Wild F Eric Staal -- is a former All-Star MVP. Representing the Carolina Hurricanes, Staal scored two goals and recorded an assist on Marc Savard's last-minute game-winner as the Eastern Conference edged the Western Conference 8-7 in the 2008 NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta.
* It has been 22 years since a defenseman captured NHL All-Star Game MVP honors (Ray Bourque, 1996) and 24 years since a goaltender captured the award (Mike Richter, 1994).
* Penguins forward Mario Lemieux became the first rookie to earn NHL All-Star MVP honors in 1985. There is one rookie in today's game, F Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks.
* The first NHL All-Star Game, held at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens, matched the defending Stanley Cup champion Maple Leafs against the NHL All-Stars. The All-Stars overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Toronto 4-3.
* Prior to the first NHL All-Star Game in 1947, the concept of pitting the NHL’s elite against each other was used in three games staged to benefit the families of former NHL stars Ace Bailey (1934), Howie Morenz (1937) and Babe Siebert (1939).
* The 1967 NHL All-Star Game marked the first time the game was played midseason, rather than prior to the start of the regular schedule.
