When the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup again this spring, Detroit general manager Ken Holland will be accepting congratulations for his astute working of the new salary-cap system. The praise will be deserved, but the strange and unprecedented alignment of the planets prodded and enabled the Red Wings to make moves that seemingly weakened them on paper - but actually strengthened them on the ice, especially when measured relatively in the New NHL.
