NEW YORK / TORONTO (April 16, 2020) – The next edition of #HockeyAtHome will feature hockey icon Wayne Gretzky and Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin in their first-ever joint sit-down interview. Hosted by NBC Sports’ Kathryn Tappen, the interview will premiere on Monday, April 20, at 5 p.m. ET on NBCSN; SN; NHL.com; and the NHL’s Facebook, IGTV and YouTube platforms.

The pair discuss Ovechkin’s pursuit of The Great One’s record 894 career goals, their love for the game, the current pause of the NHL® season and the state of the League. The Capitals captain, who on Feb. 22 became the eighth member of the NHL’s 700-goal club, currently sits two goals shy of his ninth career 50-goal season – which would tie Gretzky (and Mike Bossy) for the most in League history.

Gretzky on Ovechkin breaking his career goals record: “I don’t think there’s any doubt in my mind that he has a great chance to do that. He plays on a good team with good players. And most importantly, Alex plays hard every single night. And to me, if you don’t play hard every night, those are kind of records you can’t break. And he does that. I think it’s great for hockey.”

Ovechkin on what stood out the most about Gretzky’s style of play: “His vision of the game. How he controlled the game. How he made different players better around him. That’s a special talent….He was not that physical but he was smarter on the ice.”

During the interview, Gretzky and Ovechkin announce their plans to compete in EA Sports’ NHL®20 on the Capitals Twitch Channel on Wednesday, April 22, at 8 p.m. ET to raise funds in support of COVID-19 relief in Edmonton and the Greater Washington region.
