Avalanche winger Matt Nieto was struck in the leg by a Shea Weber shot in the third period, stayed down, and needed help off the ice. He was getting X rays after the game and Bednar said he didn’t yet have word of the results.

"I think we got wronged in that situation," coach Jeff Blashill said after the Columbus Blue Jackets won 3-2 at Joe Louis Arena after the referees ignored what the Red Wings thought was a blatant slashing penalty moments before the winning goal.

Red Wings' captain Henrik Zetterberg had the puck at center ice before his stick was broken by a slash from Columbus' Brandon Dubinsky. With his stick useless, Zetterberg left the ice and headed to the bench.

The hit drew no penalty, the only infractions coming when Jimmy Vesey and Joseph Cramarossa went off for coinciding roughing minors following their little tussle — and the Rangers happened to score on the ensuing 4-on-4 to extend their lead to 3-1.

“They just felt it wasn’t a penalty,” Vigneault said, describing the explanation he got from referees Chris Rooney and Dan O’Rourke.
