Chris Neil knows what he saw on the controversial hit that sent his centre woozily to the dressing room late in the third period of Wednesday’s game against the Washington Capitals.
“Red,” said the Senators enforcer, who believes Caps winger Tom Wilson deliberately hit Curtis Lazar in the head. “I’m seeing red. You don’t like to see one of your players go down.”
While Neil was given two minutes for seeking retribution, Wilson, who later insisted it was a clean “hip-on-hip” hit, was given a major and match penalty.
“It was the right call,” said Senators coach Dave Cameron, adding that “tomorrow will tell the tale” for Lazar, who has already suffered one concussion this season.
