from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
(2) Leafs’ defenceman Dion Phaneuf. He has one year left at a cap hit of $6.5 million, then he’s an unrestricted free-agent. He’s got the C in Toronto but there’s been a love-hate relationship there with Phaneuf, who gives the fans some offensive pop and lots of hitting, but isn’t high-grade defensively. They might want to get a cheaper blueliner or a high-end centre for Phaneuf before he hits UFA status.
(3) Flyers’ defenceman Braydon Coburn. He’s probably a second-pairing D-guy whose game has dropped off in Philly, and makes too much money. He’s the right age, only 28, but has three years left at a cap hit of $4.5 million
(4) Boston forward Rich Peverley. He’s one of the NHL’s Swiss Army knives, somebody who can play on a fourth line or higher up a roster with his speed. Good on face-offs, strong PK guy, some offence, great wheels. The Bruins have to find money for Tuukka Rask and will try to resign Nathan Horton, who is UFA. Peverley makes $3.25 million for two more years.
