The Situation In Montreal

10/23/2017 at 8:30am EDT

via Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette,

The sniper isn’t scoring, the all-world goalie can’t stop a puck, the defence is a mess.

Meanwhile, Mikhail Sergachev is heating up in Tampa Bay, Andrei Markov has four goals and 11 assists for Ak-Bars Kazan in the KHL and the one true bright spot in the Canadiens organization is undersized 19-year-old defenceman Victor Mete.

There comes a point when the tension around a team has reached critical mass — when the sheer weight of criticism aimed at a coach or a GM equals the square of the energy expended in hating the man times the speed of the team’s descent in the standings.

At that point, something has to give. But the individual making the decisions has to remain cool, calm and collected and avoid a Ron Corey disaster. The Canadiens have faced a brutal early schedule with a remade defence and a popgun offence. The worst thing the organization can do now is to panic and replace Bergevin with an inexperienced GM who is going to deal Price for prospects, plunging the team into another two decades in the wilderness.

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The heat has been turned up on high on Marc Bergevin and the Montreal Canadiens.

Eight games into the season the Habs closed out a three-game road trip to California by going pointless after a 6-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks Friday, Montreal has gone winless in seven games and the club has a 1-6-1 record as it prepares to open a three-game homestand Tuesday against the Florida Panthers.

Firing coach Claude Julien, who signed a massive five-year contract when he took over from Michel Therrien last season on Feb. 14th, isn’t an option and if owner Geoff Molson isn’t going to listen to public pressure to give Bergevin his walking papers then it’s up to the general manager to do something to get it on track.

Yes, Bergevin could always practice patience, but if that’s the case he’d better stay away from the TV and radio stations in Montreal because if the panic button hasn’t been pushed already there are many who think it should be since the Habs reportedly haven’t had this bad a start since 1941.
