The Islanders have held the Panthers’ leading scorers, Jaromir Jagr and Aleksander Barkov, without a point through the first two games, but the disparity between the teams’ seconds lines is becoming the Islanders’ primary concern.
The Islanders’ second line of Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson and Nikolay Kulemin had a minus-2 rating in the 3-1 loss to the Panthers in Game 2 Friday night, allowing Florida’s Reilly Smith to continue his domination during the series. He now has five points after registering a goal and an assist.
Islanders coach Jack Capuano said he could potentially make changes to his lineup when the series resumes Sunday in Brooklyn.
“It’s the line a little bit, but we made some errors on the back end, too,” Capuano said. “We made some mistakes on a couple of those goals. … We’ll look at our lineup [and] what we need it to be. We came down here with the speed, to try and get some speed in the lineup against their team, and now we’ll go back home and get the matchups so our lineup could change.”
