from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,
Having met the three Christmas ghosts in Charles Dickens’s 1843 novella A Christmas Carol, his heart forever changed, Ebenezer Scrooge says, “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
His was a timeless vow, when you think about it, whether you celebrate the day and the season for religious reasons, as a time to gather with friends and family to count your blessings, or merely enjoy the chance to catch your breath.
It was another famous philosopher, the star of Dr. Seuss’s 1957 classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas, who in seeing the light realized an essential truth when his small heart grew three sizes: “It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.”
Merry Christmas.
