from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
- Zdeno Chara’s ice-time has gone up past 25 minutes a night with the Boston Bruins enduring a depleted back-end. But Chara is 37 this season, he’s going to Sochi and Boston has 17 games in March. He ran out of gas in the playoffs last season, and the Bruins can’t have it happen again.
- Calgary Flames winger Mike Cammalleri’s old agent is Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis, but I’d say the Pittsburgh Penguins or the New York Rangers will make the biggest push for him at the trade deadline, even if he’ll still have $1.25 million left on his $6 million contract. The Penguins need some offence outside of their top six.
- The Edmonton Oilers continue to bang on Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon’s door to get six-foot-three centre/winger Shawn Matthias out of there. They’ve tried for two years, but so far, no fit. Matthias is normally a centre but is playing on the wing because Sasha Barkov and fellow rookie, the six-foot-five Nick Bjugstad, are their top two pivots with Marcel Goc as No. 3.
Update from George: More notes from Matheston are available here, including a, "Who knew?"
-Teemu Selanne’s new restaurant, Selanne Steak Tavern in tony Laguna Beach, Calif., just 30 minutes from Anaheim, offers a $96 Lord Stanley 32 ounce cut of beef on its menu. Selanne, who is retiring at season’s end, will stay in California because his kids love living there. He’s not moving back to Finland.
