There have been a lot of changes for the Montreal Canadiens in the last little while: the Habs have a new GM and a new head coach. And today, another big change - legendary beat writer Red Fisher is hanging 'em up.

March 17, 1955 is a monumental day in Habs history. The infamous 'Richard Riot', seen by some as a symbol of early Quebec nationalism, took place on this day. But it was also the day Red Fisher got his first assignment as beat writer for Les Habitants. Over the next half century, he honed his craft, becoming one of hockey's great storytellers.

In 1985, Red was recognized with the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for distinguished hockey writing from the Hockey Hall of Fame. He became such a fixture with the Montreal Canadiens, players often felt they had 'made it' when Red chose to interview them. And some knew they had to deliver more than sports clichés if Red was around.

Over the span of his career covering the Canadiens, Red covered seven owners, eight presidents, nine GMs, 16 captains and 17 Stanley Cup championships.

Today, the Montreal Gazette paid tribute to him with the announcement of his retirement.
