It is with great sadness the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club has learned of the passing of longtime national anthem singer Paul Lorieau, who lost his battle with cancer this evening in Edmonton.
Oilers President Patrick LaForge says, "Paul will be respected and remembered for being a key player in the history of the Edmonton Oilers. His passion and excitement became a staple at every Oilers home game for more than 30 years."
One of Lorieau's most memorable moments came in the spring of 2006 while the Oilers were making an incredible run towards the Stanley Cup. During Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals, Lorieau began singing "O Canada", but after a few short lines, pointed his microphone in the air and let the Oilers faithful conclude the remainder of the anthem.
