Here are four potentially difference-making rentals who might become available and who should interest the Rangers, pending a 50-50 split on the cap charge and the cost of return that will not be inexpensive:

Eric Staal of Carolina; Shane Doan of Arizona; Dustin Byfuglien (a defenseman who will cause everyone to keep his head up and whose presence would discourage the type of punishment routinely and unacceptably absorbed last spring by Ryan McDonagh) and Andrew Ladd of Winnipeg.

We’re talking about grinders here, physical players who compete with an edge; players who would address the lone significant deficiency on the squad.

This the brand of player the Rangers need.
