MATTHEWS SETS ROOKIE RECORDS AS MAPLE LEAFS CLIMB STANDINGS
Auston Matthews scored his 39th goal of the season to help the Maple Leafs improve to 11-2-1 in their last 14 games, including four consecutive wins. At 39-24-15 (93 points), the Maple Leafs leapfrogged the idle Bruins (43-30-6, 92 points) to move into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Division.

* Matthews (39-28—67 in 78 GP) established a single-season Maple Leafs record for points by a rookie, eclipsing the mark set by Peter Ihnacak in 1982-83 (28-38—66 in 80 GP). Matthews also established a single-season NHL record for goals by a U.S.-born rookie, breaking the mark set by Neal Broten in 1981-82 (38).

* Matthews has scored in five consecutive games and has tallied at least one point in nine straight contests (8-4—12). Elias notes that Matthews became the third rookie in franchise history to score in five or more consecutive team games, joining Alf Skinner from Jan. 28 – Feb. 13, 1918 (6 GP) and Gaye Stewart from Nov. 12-21, 1942 (5 GP).

William Nylander (22-38—60) and Mitchell Marner (18-42—60) each collected assists to become the second and third Maple Leafs rookies to reach the 60-point mark this season, joining Matthews. Elias notes that the 1980-81 Nordiques are the only other team in NHL history to feature three rookies with at least 60 points (Peter Stastny: 39-70—109, Anton Stastny: 39-46—85, Dale Hunter: 19-44—63).
