OILERS BLANK CANUCKS TO CONTINUE HOT START TO SEASON . . .
Captain Connor McDavidscored the game-winning goal on a breakaway at 11:31 of the second period and Cam Talbot denied all 26 shots he faced as the Oilers improved to 7-1-0 this season, including five straight wins.

* Elias notes that the Oilers have won seven of their first eight games of a season for the first time since 1985-86, when they started 8-1-0.

* McDavid leads the NHL with 12 points this season (5-7—12) and has registered 21-39—60 in 53 career games (1.13 PPG).

* Talbot, who has started all eight Edmonton games this season, picked up his second blank sheet in a three-game span (also Oct. 23 at WPG). His seven wins pace all goaltenders (7-1-0, 2.17 GAA, .934 SV%, 2 SO).

. . . BLUE JACKETS, JETS ALSO POST SHUTOUT VICTORIES
The Blue Jackets and Jets also held their opponents scoreless to pick up victories on Friday night:

* The Blue Jackets scored all four goals in the first period – backed by multi-goal efforts from Sam Gagner (2-0—2) and Brandon Saad (2-0—2) – and Sergei Bobrovsky made 35 saves as Columbus concluded their four-game road trip with a 2-1-1 record.

* Michael Hutchinson turned aside all 37 shots he faced and Shawn Matthias scored the only goal of the contest as the Jets picked up their first road win of the season (1-2-0).

BLACKHAWKS RALLY PAST DEVILS
Marian Hossa tied the game with 2:11 left in regulation and Artem Anisimovscored at 1:15 of overtime to help the Blackhawks hand the Devils their first home loss of the season.

* Anisimov, who scored his fifth career overtime goal, extended his point streak to a career-high six games (5-5—10). Anisimov is tied for second in League scoring with 10 points, trailing only McDavid.

LOOSE PUCKS
Forward Jeff Skinner (2-1—3) factored on all three Carolina goals, including notching the primary assist on the game-winner, to guide the Hurricanes to a 3-2 win in their home opener . . . Trailing 2-1, the Flames scored four unanswered goals to register their third straight win. Defenseman Dougie Hamilton (2-1—3) matched a career high with three points, including scoring the game-winning goal . . . Per Elias, forward Victor Rask (4-5—9) became the first Hurricanes player to start a season on a seven-game point streak since Keith Primeau in 1998-99 (4-4—8) . . . Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh (0-1—1) extended his career-high assist streak to six games (0-7—7). Elias notes that McDonagh became the first Rangers defenseman to record at least one assist in six straight games since Brian Leetch from Dec. 15-28, 2001 (0-8—8) . . . Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno (0-3—3) matched a career high with three assists . . . The Department of Player Safety suspended Bruins forward David Pastrnak for two games, without pay, for an illegal check to the head of Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi . . . The Devils and Flameseach hosted their Hockey Fights Cancer nights . . . ICYMI: NASCAR driver and Kannapolis, N.C. native Dale Earnhardt Jr. sounded the siren at PNC Arena ahead of Carolina’s home opener.
