OVECHKIN, HOLTBY HELP CAPITALS CLINCH POSTSEASON SPOT . . .
Alex Ovechkin scored the winning goal at 1:38 of overtime and Braden Holtby made 25 saves to help the Capitals become the first team to clinch a berth in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, their 26th postseason appearance in franchise history and eighth in the past nine seasons.

* At 50-14-5 (105 points), the League-leading Capitals reached the 50-win milestone for the fourth time in franchise history and first time since 2009-10, when they set franchise records for wins and points en route to capturing the Presidents’ Trophy (54-15-13, 121 points).

* Ovechkin scored his League-leading 42nd goal of the season to snap a five-game drought. He also picked up his 17th career overtime goal; that ranks second NHL history, behind only Jaromir Jagr (19).

* Holtby set a franchise record with his League-leading 42nd victory of the season, eclipsing the 41-win mark set by Olie Kolzig in 1999-00 and equaled by Holtby in 2014-15.

. . . OTHER EASTERN CONFERENCE TEAMS CONTINUE PLAYOFF PURSUIT
Several other Eastern Conference teams posted wins in their pursuit of the playoffs:

FLYERS CONTINUE PLAYOFF PUSH ON RIVALRY NIGHT
Fresh off a 4-3 victory against the Red Wings (34-25-11, 79 points) – the current occupant of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference – the Flyers (33-23-12, 78 points) continue their playoff push when they visit the Blackhawks (41-23-6, 88 points) at United Center on NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Rivalry. Philadelphia has compiled a 7-1-1 record in its past nine game to climb within one point of the last postseason spot in the Eastern Conference. Chicago, meanwhile, has dropped three straight (0-2-1) as it battles for supremacy in the Central Division and Western Conference. This marks the second and final meeting of the season between these clubs; the Flyers have won five of their seven head-to-head contests since the 2010 Stanley Cup Final, including a 3-0 victory on Oct. 14 at Wells Fargo Center.
