CONDON, GALLAGHER LEAD CANADIENS TO CLASSIC WIN
Massachusetts native Mike Condon made 27 saves and Brendan Gallagher recorded 1-1—2 in his return from a 17-game absence to lead the Canadiens past the Bruins in the2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.


* At 22-15-3 (47 points), the Canadiens leapfrogged the idle Panthers (21-12-4, 46 points) to move back into first place in the Atlantic Division, where the top six teams are separated by seven points. Montreal also opened a three-point cushion over Boston (20-13-4, 44 points), spearheaded by wins in three of their first four meetings of the season.

* Condon – who was born in nearby Holliston, Mass. – improved to 2-1-0 in three career games against his hometown team (2.03 GAA, .927 SV%). He owns an 11-9-3 record in his first 26 NHL appearances (2.42 GAA, .907 SV%).

* “Probably the most special [game of my career],” Condon said. “I had a lot of friends and family here [Friday], Bruins-Habs, Gillette Stadium. Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. I don’t think you could script it any better.”

* ICYMI: New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Bradysigned Condon’s special mask for the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, which paid tribute to the team’s four Super Bowl victories.

* Gallagher, who had not played since Nov. 22, raised his totals to 10-11—21 in 23 outings this season. The Canadiens improved to 17-4-2 with him in the lineup after going 5-11-1 during his 17-game absence.

* “Just kind of a perfect event, perfect day, went our way,” Gallagher explained. “We all had so much fun. You can’t undervalue the smiles that everyone had coming into the rink. Starting [Thursday] at practice, everyone chipped in. It was a great team effort. For me coming back, I said I wasn’t going to come back if I couldn’t contribute, and I was happy to be a part of it [Friday].”

WINTER CLASSIC QUICK HITS
* The Canadiens and Bruins faced off for the 733rd time in the regular season and 910th time including the playoffs, the most of any two teams in NHL history. Montreal improved to 358-265-110 (826 points) in their regular-season meetings, including wins in 13 of their past 15 matchups dating to March 3, 2013 (BOS: 272-349-112, 656 points).

* Road teams improved to 12-3-1 in the NHL’s 16 regular-season outdoor games, including a 6-1-1 record in the Winter Classic.

* Canadiens forward Paul Byron (2-0—2) registered his second career multi-goal game and first since Nov. 13, 2014 vs. ARI (2-0—2 w/ CGY). He became the 10th player to post a multi-goal performance in an outdoor game and the first to do so since Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews (2-1—3) in the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series vs. PIT at Soldier Field.

* Canadiens forward David Desharnais scored 74 seconds after the opening face-off, marking the second-fastest goal to start one of the NHL’s regular-season outdoor games.Colby Armstrong holds the record, scoring for the Penguins just 21 seconds after the opening face-off in the 2008 Amp Energy NHL Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.

* The Canadiens improved to 2-1-0 in three outdoor game appearances, while the Bruins fell to 1-1-0 in two such contests.

Friday’s sell-out crowd of 67,246 for the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic raised total attendance for the League’s 16 regular-season outdoor games to 920,534 – an average of 57,533 per game:

Jacob Markstrom turned aside 27 shots through overtime and denied all three shootout attempts he faced to propel the Canucks to a 4-1-1 record in their last six games . . . Forward Daniel Sedin, who has spent his entire NHL career with Vancouver, became the third player in Canucks history to appear in 1,100 games. The others: Trevor Linden(1,140 GP) and his brother, Henrik Sedin (1,129 GP) . . . Bruins forward Matt Beleskeyscored his second goal in as many outdoor game appearances (also 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series w/ ANA). Beleskey has four goals in his past four games, equaling his total from his first 31 contests of the season . . . ICYMI: Ducks defenseman Kevin Bieksa, who played his first 10 NHL seasons with the Canucks (56-185—241 in 597 GP), received a standing ovation in his return to Rogers Arena.
