Today marks the 96th anniversary of the NHL’s first games. Teams from original NHL franchise cities in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa all are in action on the 11-game slate.

MILESTONE NIGHT FOR JAGR
Jaromir Jagr scored what proved to be the game-winning goal to lead the Devils to their second consecutive victory. In doing so, he passed Gordie Howe for the most career game-winning goals in NHL history (122) and Steve Yzerman for eighth place on the League’s all-time goals list (693).

* Jagr has 693-1,024—1,717 in 1,426 career NHL games. He now sits one goal behind Mark Messier and six points behind Mario Lemieux for seventh place in League history.

* Jagr has 1-6—7 during a five-game point streak, his second such streak this season (Oct. 19-29: 1-6—7).

* Jagr leads the Devils with 12 goals, 17 assists and 29 points in 35 games this season. He also paces the club with four game-winning goals, tied for seventh in the NHL.

SUTTER, FLEURY LIFT PENGUINS OVER RANGERS
Brandon Sutter scored his seventh goal of the season and potted the lone tally in the shootout to lift the Penguins to their fifth consecutive victory and 10th win in their last 11 games.

* Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves to become the first goaltender to reach 20 wins this season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is third goaltender in Penguins history to achieve that feat, joining Tom Barrasso in 1992-93 and Ken Wregget in 1994-95.

* Fleury has a 2.00 goals-against average and .924 save percentage in 30 appearances this season, both ahead of his career bests (2.32 GAA in 2010-11, .921 SV% in 2007-08). He also has three shutouts; his single-season high in that category is five, set in 67 appearances during 2006-07.

* Sidney Crosby collected a pair of assists to extend his point streak to eight games (6-7—13). Crosby leads the NHL with 19-30—49 in 36 games this season, three points ahead of Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane (20-26—46 in 37 GP).

* The Penguins improved to 9-2-0 in their last 11 games versus the Rangers.

WILSON HEARING
Capitals forward Tom Wilson will have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety today for a hit on Flyers forward Brayden Schenn Tuesday at Wells Fargo Center.

At 15:17 of the second period, Wilson was assessed a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct. Wilson also received a five-minute major for fighting in the immediate aftermath of the hit.

Schenn did not return to the game due to an upper-body injury.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: charging. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

REMINDER: ROSTER FREEZE GOES INTO EFFECT TONIGHT
The holiday roster freeze goes into effect as of midnight (local time) tonight. The freeze applies to all players on an NHL active roster, injured reserve, or with non-roster and injured non-roster status and runs through midnight (local time) Dec. 27, with respect to waivers, trades and loans, subject to the exceptions provided for in CBA Article 16.5 (d).

LOOSE PUCKS
Devils defenseman Eric Gelinas posted 1-1—2, his second career multi-point game. He ranks second among rookie blueliners with 4-11—15 in 26 games this season . . . Rangers defenseman John Moore recorded two assists for his first multi-point game since Dec. 29, 2011 . . . Devils forward Reid Boucher scored his first NHL goal (in his seventh career game) . . . Penguins defenseman Philip Samuelsson faced off against his father Ulf, an assistant coach for the Rangers, for the first time in the NHL . . . The Blues agreed to a three-year contract extension with forward Alexander Steen, who has 22-14—36 in 33 games this season.
