MONDAY’S RESULT
Home Team in Caps
WASHINGTON 1, NY Rangers 0 – WSH leads series 2-1

HOLTBY, BEAGLE HELP CAPITALS TAKE 2-1 SERIES LEAD
Braden Holtby stopped all 30 shots he faced and Jay Beagle scored the lone goal at 7:31 of the second period to lift the Capitals to a 2-1 series lead over the Rangers.

* The Capitals earned a 1-0 postseason victory for the third time in franchise history. The other instances: April 12, 2001 vs. PIT (Olie Kolzig: 16 SV) and May 4, 2013 vs. NYR (Holtby: 24 SV).

* Holtby registered his second career playoff shutout, exactly two years after his first – also a 1-0 victory (in OT) vs. NYR. On May 4, 2013, Holtby stopped all 24 shots he faced to backstop the Capitals to a 2-0 series lead over the Rangers in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. New York, however, ultimately came back to win that series in seven games.

* Via Elias, Holtby became the sixth goaltender in NHL history whose first two career playoff shutouts came in 1-0 victories. The others: Tiny Thompson (1929), George Hainsworth (1927 and 1930), Frank McCool (1945), Jean-Sebastien Giguere (2003) and Evgeni Nabokov (2001 and 2004).

* Holtby improved to 8-9 with a 1.94 goals-against average, .932 save percentage and two shutouts in 17 career postseason games vs. NYR. He has a 3-6-1 record with a 2.34 goals-against average, .926 save percentage and zero shutouts in 11 career regular-season appearances against the Rangers.

* Overall, Holtby improved to 5-4 with a 1.54 goals-against average, .949 save percentage and one shutout during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs (9 GP). He ranks second in the NHL in both goals-against average and save percentage (behind Craig Anderson: 0.97 GAA, .972 SV%).

* Holtby has allowed no more than one goal in 12 of his 15 career playoff wins, including each of his last nine dating to Game 6 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Semifinals vs. NYR.

* “It was obviously a little crazy out there, but I thought we did a great job of controlling our mindset, our game plan,” Holtby said. “We just played smart. At the end of the day, that is why we won.”

* Beagle snapped a 13-game drought with his first postseason goal since May 6, 2013 at NYR. It stood as his first game-winning goal in the playoffs (3-4—7 in 33 GP).

* Beagle also won 10-of-12 face-offs (83.3%). He leads all players in face-off winning percentage during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs (81-of-120, 67.5%).

* Andre Burakovsky and Troy Brouwer picked up the assists on Beagle’s goal. Burakovsky earned his first career postseason point (7 GP), while Brouwer has 7-12—19 in his playoff career (74 GP).

* The Capitals have yet to suffer consecutive losses during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, bouncing back with wins on all four occasions thus far (also following Games 1, 3 and 6 in FR vs. NYI). In fact, they have not lost consecutive games since March 11-13 (dating to the regular season), a span of 23 contests.

* The Capitals also improved to 4-0 when scoring first during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They went 37-2-4 in that scenario during the regular season; their .860 winning percentage led the NHL.

NHL ANNOUNCES MESSIER AWARD FINALISTS
The NHL announced that Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, Jets captain Andrew Ladd and Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews are the three finalists for the 2014-15 Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone, awarded “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season.”

Mark Messier solicits suggestions from club and League personnel as well as NHL fans to compile a list of potential candidates for the award. However, the selection of the three finalists and ultimate winner is Messier’s alone. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, June 24, during the 2015 NHL Awards from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Click here for more information on each finalist.

* ICYMI: The NHL and NHLPA will reveal the three finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award prior to tonight’s games.

LOOSE PUCKS
The Rangers played their 10th consecutive one-goal postseason game dating to Game 4 of the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. Per Elias, that is the longest such streak in NHL history . . . The Rangers allowed two or fewer goals for the sixth straight contest, the first time they have done so in the playoffs since 1997 . . . Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist (21 SV) appeared in his 100th career postseason game, becoming the first player in club history to reach the milestone (skater or goaltender). He also became the 17th goaltender in NHL history to achieve the feat and the 10th to do so with one franchise . . . The Rangers contested their 65th playoff game since 2012, surpassing the Kings (64) for the most in that span . . . Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen led all players with 25:56 of ice-time and seven blocked shots . . . Teammate Nicklas Backstrom won 15-of-20 draws (75.0%) . . . ICYMI: The Devils hired Ray Shero as the fourth general manager in franchise history. Shero takes over for Lou Lamoriello, who served in that capacity since Sept. 10, 1987. Lamoriello will continue his role as the team’s president, a position he has held since April 30, 1987 . . . Check out the best sights and sounds from Game 2 between the Wild and Blackhawks and Flames and Ducks.
