HOMETOWN STAR JOHANSEN TAKES MVP HONORS
With 52% of the Twitter vote, Ryan Johansen of Team Foligno was named MVP of the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game.

The top pick in Friday’s 2015 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft presented by DraftKings and the winner of Saturday’s Honda NHL Breakaway Challenge, Johansen led Team Foligno with 2-2—4, including a pair of goals in the opening period. He also paced all skaters with seven shots on goal.

“It hasn’t hit me yet for sure. This is something that I’ll remember for a long, long time,” said Johansen, who leads the Blue Jackets with 17-26—43 in 45 games this season. “It meant a lot to me to see the fans and how much it meant to them. We spent two hours [Sunday] morning signing autographs at the convention center. We were having a great time. Kids were laughing and smiling. It was a great thing to see the last few days.”

Johansen became the first player to win the NHL All-Star Game MVP on home ice since 2009, when Canadiens forward Alex Kovalev did so in Montreal. As part of the MVP honors, Johansen received a 2015 Honda Accord EX-L, made in Ohio.

MORE RECORDS AND NOTES
There were several other record-setting performances and highlights during the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game:

* Team Toews scored seven goals in the second period, matching an NHL All-Star Game record for goals by one team in a single period (Wales, 1st period, 1990).

* Team Toews (7) and Team Foligno (4) combined for 11 goals in the second period, setting a record for the most goals in one period of an NHL All-Star Game. The previous mark of 10 was achieved four times, most recently in 2009 (West – 6, East – 4, 2nd period).

* Ryan Suter (Team Toews) and Claude Giroux (Team Foligno) scored eight seconds apart in the second period to match the NHL All-Star Game record for fastest two strikes. That mark was established in 1997, when Owen Nolan (West) found the back of the net twice in eight seconds.

* Suter, Giroux and Tyler Seguin (Team Toews) combined for three goals in 58 seconds in the second period. They were the second-fastest trio of goals in NHL All-Star Game history. The record of 48 seconds was set in 2007 (Martin Havlat, Sheldon Souray, Dion Phaneuf).

* Suter, Giroux, Seguin and Steven Stamkos (Team Foligno) also combined for four goals in 2:03 of the second period, setting an NHL All-Star Game record for the fastest four tallies. The previous mark of 2:16 was set in 2012 (Marian Hossa, Zdeno Chara, Corey Perry, Daniel Sedin).

* All 17 skaters on Team Toews registered at least one point and one shot on goal. Fourteen Team Toews players notched multiple points.

* Thirty-two of the 35 total position players posted at least one point, including 10 multi-point performances by Team Foligno.

* Rick Nash (Team Toews) scored a pair of goals, giving him 9-5—14 in six NHL All-Star Game appearances. Nash’s nine career NHL All-Star Game goals are tied for fourth all-time with Teemu Selanne, behind only Wayne Gretzky (13), Mario Lemieux (13) and Gordie Howe (10).

* Four players on Team Toews collected four assists, one shy of the single-game NHL All-Star record established by Mats Naslund in 1988. Those four players: Patrice Bergeron, Aaron Ekblad, Vladimir Tarasenko and Jonathan Toews.

* Mark Giordano (Team Toews) led all players with a +6 rating, followed by teammate Patrik Elias (+5).

* Amid the record-setting goal total, Corey Crawford (Team Toews) led all goaltenders with 14 saves on 18 shots against in the second period.

* Although the teams scored a record-setting 29 goals, their combined shots total of 92 (Team Toews: 47, Team Foligno: 45) fell 10 shy of the NHL All-Star Game record reached in 1994 and 2009 (102).

OVECHKIN DOESN’T WIN MVP, BUT GETS CAR FOR GOOD CAUSE
Despite lobbying for a car throughout the weekend, Alex Ovechkin did not win the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game MVP honors, although he did register three assists for Team Foligno.

Even though he missed out on the in-game honors, Ovechkin did receive a car from Honda following the contest. Ovechkin campaigned for the car on behalf of the Washington Ice Dogs hockey program, which he holds a special connection with. That includes a friendship with program member Ann Schaub, a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome who went on a sushi date with Ovechkin in September.

“It means a lot. Honda connected with my agent and they just gave me a car, so I’m going to donate to [the Ice Dogs] and that sweet little girl,” Ovechkin said. “I’m pretty sure they’re going to use [the car] all the time. Obviously for them it’s going to be a great present from my side, from Honda’s side and from all the NHL’s side.”
