NHL Short Notes

04/20/2022 at 1:59am EDT

* For the first time since March 11, someone other than Connor McDavid leads the NHL in points. Jonathan Huberdeau now holds that distinction after teaming up with Aleksander Barkov to lead the Panthers to an overtime win.

* Artemi Panarin recorded multiple assists for the 19th time this season and the Rangers posted a shutout victory for the third straight game en route to securing their first 50-win campaign since 2014-15.

* Matt Duchene scored his 40th goal of 2021-22 and wrote his name into the Predators history books Tuesday, becoming the franchise’s first player to reach the mark in a single season.

HUBERDEAU AND BARKOV TEAM UP AGAIN TO LEAD PANTHERS TO ANOTHER WIN
Aleksander Barkov (3-0—3) tied the game with 3:58 remaining in regulation and won the game for Florida 20 seconds into overtime to complete his third career hat trick, while Jonathan Huberdeau (0-3—3) assisted on all three of his captain’s goals to help the Panthers (55-15-6, 116 points) continue their pursuit of the 2021-22 Presidents’ Trophy. The NHL-leading Avalanche (55-15-6, 116 points) currently hold top spot in the overall standings due to regulation wins (COL: 45; FLA: 40).

* Florida extended its winning streak to 11 games Tuesday – the lengthiest run by any team this season and one shy of the longest in franchise history. The last club to post a longer stretch of consecutive victories was Columbus (16 GP) in 2016-17.

* Two of Barkov’s three hat tricks have been completed with an overtime goal after first doing so on Dec. 15, 2018 versus Toronto. The Panthers captain, who is the only skater in franchise history to cap off a hat trick in overtime, became just the fifth active NHL player to do so multiple times – he joined Alex Ovechkin (2x), Vladimir Tarasenko (2x), Tomas Hertl (2x) and Anthony Duclair (2x).

* Huberdeau (30-81—111 in 76 GP) eclipsed the 80-assist mark to overtake Connor McDavid (42-68—110 in 75 GP) in the 2021-22 Art Ross Trophy race. No Panthers skater has ever captured the award, but Pavel Bure (58-36—94 in 74 GP) came the closest after finishing second to Jaromir Jagr (42-54—96 in 63 GP) in 1999-00.

PANARIN HELPS RANGERS EARN 50TH WIN WITH ANOTHER MULTI-ASSIST GAME
Artemi Panarin (0-2—2) factored on two of his team’s three goals, while Igor Shesterkin (31 saves) helped the Rangers earn their third consecutive team shutout and 50th victory of the season (50-21-6, 106 points). New York reached the 50-win mark for the fifth time and first since a franchise-record 53 victories in 2014-15.

* Panarin collected his 19th multi-assist game of 2021-22 and established a Rangers record for most in a single season, surpassing Brian Leetch (18 in 1991-92), Mark Messier (18 in 1992-93) and Jean Ratelle (18 in 1971-72).

DID YOU KNOW?
Gerard Gallant joined Mike Keenan (52 in 1993-94) as the second head coach to record 50 wins in his first season with the Rangers. Additionally, Gallant became just the second head coach in NHL history to record 50-plus wins in their first campaign with multiple franchises (also 51 w/ VGK in 2017-18), joining Keenan once again (also 53 w/ PHI in 1984-85).

WESTERN CONFERNCE CLUBS COLLECT WINS, GAIN GROUND IN STANDINGS
The Predators (44-28-5, 93 points) and Kings (41-27-10, 92 points) each picked up wins and stand as two of six teams in the Western Conference standings separated by seven points.

* Matt Duchene (40-38—78 in 73 GP) tallied in regulation to become the first 40-goal scorer in franchise history and Mikael Granlund got the decisive marker in the shootout as the Predators edged the Pacific Division-leading Flames at Bridgestone Arena. Nashville opened a two-point lead over idle Dallas (43-28-5, 91 points) for the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

* Jonathan Quick made 29 saves to earn his 20th win of 2021-22 (20-13-9) – joining teammate Cal Peterson (20-14-1) in reaching the mark this season – as the Kings defeated the Ducks to move within two points of the second-place Oilers (44-26-6, 94 points) in the Pacific Division. Only one other campaign in franchise history has featured multiple goaltenders each record 20 victories: 1990-91 (Kelly Hrudey: 26 & Daniel Berthiaume: 20).

MAPLE LEAFS’ 300-GOAL SEASON FEATURED IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
William Nylander (1-1—2) factored on two of five Maple Leafs goals and Jack Campbell (37 saves) recorded his first career 30-win campaign as Toronto (51-20-6, 108 points) opened up an eight-point cushion on Tampa Bay (46-22-8, 100 points) for second place in the Atlantic Division. The 2021-22 campaign marks the seventh time the Maple Leafs have scored 300-plus goals in a single season and first since 1989-90.
