NHL Short Notes

02/03/2022 at 5:49am EST

* The NHL contested its final games before the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, which will see the Golden Knights and city of Las Vegas welcome the League’s biggest stars to ‘The Entertainment Capital of the World’ from Feb. 4-6.

* Kevin Fiala extended his double-digit point streak to match a franchise record, while Cam Talbot recorded a shutout ahead of his first career NHL All-Star Game appearance.

* Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored a timely shorthanded goal as Edmonton edged Washington Wednesday, while fellow Pacific Division clubs Los Angeles, Calgary and Seattle also secured wins.

FIALA, WILD EXTEND STREAKS AHEAD OF ALL-STAR BREAK
Kevin Fiala (1-1—2) extended his career-high point streak to 12 games (9-7—16) and Cam Talbot turned aside all 30 shots he faced as Minnesota improved to 9-0-1 (19 points) in its last 10 contests, including six straight wins.

* Fiala matched the franchise record for longest point streak, a mark set by Mikael Granlund from Jan. 12–Feb. 4, 2017 (5-12—17 in 12 GP). Talbot recorded the 25th shutout of his NHL career, which trails only Sergei Bobrovsky (35) for the most among active undrafted goaltenders.

* ICYMI: Talbot was named to the Central Division roster for the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Game (3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT on Feb. 5; ABC, Sportsnet, TVA Sports) and can become the sixth goaltender in League history to appear in the event for the first time at age 34 or older, following Johnny Bower (age 36 in 1961), Manny Legace (age 34 in 2008), Mike Smith (age 34 in 2017), Dwayne Roloson (age 34 in 2004) and Rejean Lemelin (age 34 in 1989).

NUGENT-HOPKINS HELPS OILERS GET GROUNDHOG DAY WIN IN WASHINGTON
Although Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter Wednesday, the goals arrived early for the Oilers as Leon Draisaitl (1-1—2), Evander Kane (1-1—2) and Connor McDavid each scored in the opening 5:07 to put Edmonton up 3-0. Washington then tallied three consecutive goals of its own to pull even, but Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2-1—3) scored a shorthanded marker with 4:03 remaining in regulation to give Edmonton the lead for good.

* Nugent-Hopkins became the third player in franchise history to score a shorthanded goal in go-ahead fashion during the final five minutes of regulation, joining Magnus Paajarvi (56:50 on Feb. 10, 2013) and Paul Coffey (56:46 on Dec. 26, 1984).

KINGS, FLAMES AND KRAKEN HEAD INTO ALL-STAR BREAK ON WINNING NOTE
Los Angeles, Calgary and Seattle of the Pacific Division also earned wins, with Wednesday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featuring more notes from the five-game slate in addition to the ones found below:

* Arthur Kaliyev, who was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan but moved to Michigan where he played for the Little Caesars and Compuware minor hockey programs, accounted for one of the Kings’ five goals in Detroit. Los Angeles (24-16-7, 55 points) leapfrogged idle Anaheim (23-16-9, 55 points) for second place in the Pacific Division – the last time the Kings held the first or second seed in their division entering an All-Star/Olympic break was in 2015-16 (1st; 30-16-3, 63 points).

* Christopher Tanev (1-3—4) factored on all four of the Flames’ goals and established a new career high for points in a single game. He became the first Calgary defenseman with four or more points in a contest since Mark Giordano over three years ago (1-3—4 on Nov. 1, 2018).

* Philipp Grubauer (19 saves) guided the Kraken to their first-ever shutout win in franchise history, while Jared McCann (1-1—2) scored his team-leading 19th goal of the season (19-11—30 in 41 GP) and tied a career high set in 2018-19 (19-16—35 in 78 GP).
