* The Hurricanes kept their perfect record intact as the club improved to 9-0-0 and tied the Canadiens (2015-16) for the second-longest season-opening win streak in NHL history.

* Leon Draisaitl reached an NHL-leading 9-11—20 and became the first player to hit the 20-point mark in a season in fewer than 10 games since Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux (9 GP in 2002-03) did so.

* Cole Sillinger (18 years, 172 days) became the youngest Blue Jackets player to record a three-point outing and the Blues scored a shorthanded game-tying goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation to round out Wednesday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates.

HURRICANES, ANDERSEN KEEP THEIR PERFECT STARTS INTACT
Frederik Andersen earned his NHL-leading eighth win of the season – the fourth-longest win streak to start a campaign in NHL history – and helped the Hurricanes secure their ninth straight win to start 2021-22. Wednesday marked Carolina’s 45th regular-season victory in the 2021 calendar year, which is tied with Florida for the most by any club.

* The Hurricanes tied the Canadiens (9-0-0 in 2015-16) for the second-longest season-opening win streak in NHL history, behind the Sabres (10 GP in 2006-07) and Maple Leafs (10 GP in 1993-94).

* Rod Brind'Amour (9-0-0) owns the second-longest win streak to start a season for a reigning Jack Adams Trophy winner, trailing only Lindy Ruff (10 GP in 2006-07) and Pat Burns (10 GP in 1993-94).

DRAISAITL RECORDS NHL-LEADING 20TH POINT OF 2021-22
Leon Draisaitl (2-1—3) recorded his fifth three-or-more point outing of the season and became the first player to reach the 20-point mark in 2021-22, while Connor McDavid (0-2—2) extended his season-opening point streak to nine games to help Edmonton improve to 8-1-0.

* Draisaitl (9-11—20 in 9 GP) became the second player in franchise history to record 20 points in a season in fewer than 10 games, joining Wayne Gretzky who accomplished the feat five times (7 GP in 1986-87, 1984-85 & 1983-84; 8 GP in 1987-88 & 1985-86).

* McDavid became the fourth player in franchise history to record a season-opening point streak of nine or more games.

PENGUINS, FLAMES HOST HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER AWARENESS NIGHTS

The Penguins (3-3-2, 8 points) and Flames (6-1-2, 14 points) will host their Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night Thursday when they square off with the Flyers (5-2-1, 11 points) and Stars (3-4-2, 8 points), respectively.

* On Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night in Pittsburgh, Jeff Carter is set to appear in his 1,100th career game after he reached the 400-goal milestone earlier this season on Oct. 14. Carter will become just the third active player with at least 400 goals and 1,100 contests, joining Joe Thornton (426-1,1041,530 in 1,686 GP) and Alex Ovechkin (739-596—1,335 in 1,206 GP).

* Carter’s teammate, Brian Boyle, registered a career outing on a previous Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night as a member of the Devils and coincidentally against the Penguins on Nov. 5, 2018. Just 12 days after announcing his cancer was in remission, Boyle recorded his first career hat trick.

* In Calgary, the Flames will put their eight-game point streak on the line (6-0-2) with Johnny Gaudreau (2-9—11 in 9 GP) and Elias Lindholm (7-4—11 in 9 GP) leading the way. Calgary looks to string together at least one point in nine consecutive games for the fifth time in six seasons (9 GP in 2019-20, 9 GP in 2018-19, 11 GP in 2017-18 & 12 GP in 2016-17).

* The Flames’ Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night will include Dan Joyce, a country singer and lifelong Flames fan battling cancer, joining George Canyon for the national anthem and 16-year-old Aman Ravji, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in November 2019, participating in various game activations throughout the evening.

OVECHKIN EYES 10TH GOAL IN SHOWDOWN WITH PANTHERS
Alex Ovechkin (9-6—15 in 9 GP) and the Capitals (5-1-3, 13 points) travel to FLA Live Arena, where the Panthers (8-0-1, 17 points) have won each of their past nine home regular-season games dating back to last season (since April 24).

* Ovechkin (36 years, 48 days) can become the NHL’s first player to reach the 10-goal mark in a season for the third time (also in 2013-14 and 2017-18). Should he reach double digits, the 2021-22 campaign would be the third in NHL history to feature a player 36 or older as the first skater to 10 goals – Mike Gartner (1996-97 w/ PHX) and Maurice Richard (1957-58 w/ MTL) both achieved the feat at age 36.

* Florida, which can start a season with a point streak of 10 or more games for the second time in franchise history (12 GP in 1996-97: 8-0-4), can become the seventh team in the last 21 years to achieve the feat.
